Title: Subtitles Vs American Actors?
Aerith's_Man - May 30, 2005 11:33 PM (GMT)
Oklay for the new release of AC what do you all want to see? Subtitles or voice actors? I personally want subtitles even though I loathe them, the reason is is that I like the trailer with the original cast for the voices even if not american and I think americanizing it would throw it off.
Coral - June 1, 2005 01:16 PM (GMT)
I'd like subtitles too ^^ I watched Princess Mononoke in japanese first then in english and I didn't like it at all. It depends of the actors of course.
SE won't voice Cloud in french :lmao: so I guess I'll have subtitles anyway!
Kagome - June 1, 2005 02:19 PM (GMT)
I don't mind subtitles. But I don't care if they have American actors or subtitles. There is nothing wrong with American actors though. Some of them are bad and some of them are good, so yeah. ^.^
Toxo - June 1, 2005 02:33 PM (GMT)
I want finnish subtitles.
Yes...I do undestand english, but sometimes it's little bit hard. :ermm:
Sefie - June 1, 2005 06:02 PM (GMT)
SE always does a good job with dubbing*Points to KH* It'll be fine with American voice actors. Personally, I hope they dub and subtitle and then I can decide which I prefer.
As was said before, dubbing always depends on the voice actors(like, I prefer dubbed Ranma, but the voice actors in Weiz Kruz are so terrible I can only watch subtitled)
Shy-Guy05 - June 1, 2005 06:58 PM (GMT)
I think they should have both.....
aeriscloud - June 1, 2005 11:10 PM (GMT)
If SE is putting it for DVD, why not both? I see no problem with sub or dub and I pretty got tired of the sub vs dub war. I think it would make both sides happy to choose their own options if the dvd had dual language options. :winner:
Tifa Lockheart - June 2, 2005 06:12 AM (GMT)
Subtitles are better, in my opinion. I hate American voice actors for foreign flicks or even animé because majority of them sound so dead and so unrealistic.
Besides, the Japanese voice actors in Advent Children deserve to be recognized by more people worldwide so I think it's better if they just put subtitles to it and not dub it in English.
FF_Goddess - June 5, 2005 06:53 PM (GMT)
There are tons of great American voice actors in Anime, so they really have no reason not to dub it. On occasion, I will come across some really pathetic voice acting, but, for the most part, the voice actors I have heard are fantastic. If they don't dub it, I am going to be ticked. I hate the sound of Japanese voice actors. They all sound like little kids and I can't even tell half of them apart. <_<

Same here, I hate Voice actors that are american they suck. I liked the voice actors for Fushigi yugi, but when hearing the japanese version of it, I hatedthe americanized version.
Kaldea - June 5, 2005 08:12 PM (GMT)
I prefered the English voices in Cowboy Bebop by far. If AC's English voices are as good as that, I'm all for it.
FF_Goddess - June 6, 2005 12:19 AM (GMT)
I really don't understand why anyone would want to listen to those awful Japanese voice actors. They sound like they haven't even hit puberty yet. :lmao:
The voice actors I have heard have all been great. Richard Ian Cox does a fantastic job as Inuyasha. He captures all of the attitude so perfectly! And David Kaye as Sesshomaru... He has the most sexy voice... *Drools* Not to mention Johnny Bosch, who does Vash the Stampede. That guy made Vash even more hilarious. :P Who could pass up talent like this to read subtitles??? I just don't get you guys...

because the natural japanese voices are the voices that the creators imagined their charcters to have. That an American voice actors suck butt. They get to flat they don't Capture the true essence of the feelings. The japanese actors capture not just the charctors feelings but also the feelings of the enviornment, which the american actors do not.

Well, that is your opinion on the matter. However, I have the opposite view. To me, the Japanese voice actors do not at all sound like I would imagine the characters should sound. The American voice actors always seem to capture that piece of personality and attitude that the Japanese voice actors just flat out miss. They all sound like 6-year-olds to me. And all of their voices just run together and sound the same to me. I never hear the range of voices with the Japanese actors that I do with the American actors. Plus, reading the subtitles takes away from the whole experience, IMO. So, let's not start with the "your side sucks" bit. Please be a little more mature about it. <_< I happen to be a VERY big fan of some of the American voice actors.
Seii Monogatari - June 6, 2005 01:21 AM (GMT)
I think it depends on which English VAs they pick. I love the English voice actors for shows like Angel Sanctuary, Cowboy Bebop, and InuYasha, but I've grown really attached to the Japanese VAs in AC. It would seem weird to me at this point to see the characters with different voices coming out of them. :ph43r:
Square will put both subs and dubs on the english version, I'm sure, and I'll end up watching both of them. ^_^
Tacofoolio - June 6, 2005 01:31 AM (GMT)
I hope they do dub, for one thing, if I have to read everything, I sometimes miss what's going on. Most likely they will do both, but I really do want to have voices in English. Don't be so hard on Americans! As a thespian I resent that! :P
FF_Goddess - June 6, 2005 01:49 AM (GMT)
*Jumps up and down* Yay for American actors!!! ^_^
They should do both. It would only be fair for both sides.
Tifa Lockheart - June 10, 2005 07:20 AM (GMT)
I like the original voices. Original is better. So I'd rather listen to the Japanese voice actors and read the subtitles if ever I can't understand enough Japanese. ;)
Carmencita - June 10, 2005 10:15 AM (GMT)
I'd like it better if it were subbed, but I'd like it to be dubbed if their dubbing is interesting enough.
yin-chan - June 10, 2005 10:59 AM (GMT)
I'd rather read the subtittles as well!!
Dubbed just doesn't do it for me......I almost died from watching Pokemon... T__T
Tacofoolio - June 10, 2005 04:27 PM (GMT)
Just a question, why do so many people dislike American voice dubs so much they'd rather not understand it? I still get the full experience with dubs, why are you so sure they will do a bad job? Perhaps even sometimes the Japanese voice actors aren't that great and you don't know because you can't understand.
I'm pretty accepting of voice actors of any language, I even listen to Spanish sometimes and it sounds odd at first, but it's all interpretation of the character by the VA. Just because it's not original doesn't make it anything less! Now if they honestly did a horrible job I understand being miffed, but you haven't given them a shot. I'm not trying to debate, I just don't know why so many are sure it'll be bad. Sorry if I offended anyone, I just wanted to say my opinion.
aerithstrife - June 10, 2005 08:46 PM (GMT)
I don't know.....I mean both VA has their flaws. Neither the Japanese nor America VA can be perfect. Some can be squeeky...or just way off. Plus, I hate this sub vs dub war too. I think both sides has their good points and bad points, neither one is perfect. SE should make it has BOTH, dual languages with options for people to choose.
Cloudsgirl - June 10, 2005 10:47 PM (GMT)
I hate subtitles, I can't watch and read at the same time, it gives me a headache and I think I'm missing something. :P
Aerith's_Man - June 10, 2005 11:36 PM (GMT)
Tocofolio does kind of make a good point. I do like subs more because I can get a feel for the voices the creators felt, because I write stories and sometimes I find that a voice I picture can't be played right by anyone. But I know that some Japanese Va's do a horrible job, because on those kind, I fall alseep. But I perfer Subtitles in AC because I have grown accustomed to their voices and I love them so very muchly.
Naseroth - June 10, 2005 11:44 PM (GMT)
I say go with both, if want actors have an english language option, if you like subtitles then go to the options and put in japanese language for the voice acting. That's what I sometimes do... not to mention it's a cheap way of learning japanese. :P
Fusion - June 11, 2005 02:04 AM (GMT)
I also think there should be an option. I of course would watch it with dubbing, I just dont like reading subtitles. One, I have horrbile vision, and two, I just cant pay attention to the movie when im reading, I always miss stuff.
Tifa Lockheart - June 11, 2005 06:16 AM (GMT)
They just need to choose BETTER voice actors, those that will fit the character they're going to play and those with good diction, can become one with the character and with matching accents with the type of character they're playing. Sometimes the mood of the actor doesn't match the character and the statement can sound bad. It's like saying "OH!!!" in different moods like when you're happy, angry, feeling seductive or sad. For example you say "OH!" supposedly you need to sound angry, but the voice actor made a mistake and uttered it in a happy way. There are a lot of misinterpretations with the scripts too.
Many voice actors (whether American/Spanish/Filipino/whatever) these days just lend their voices to those characters just for the sake of lending them, to give "life" to them without considering being one with the character itself even for just a moment when they're playing the role. It's just sad. :(

I agree with the banned person. I don't mind sub's, but if I can get my without them, I'm fine with that.
Anastar - June 11, 2005 01:45 PM (GMT)
It doesn't make much difference to me whether it's subtitled or with American VA's. Subtitles don't bother me very much - it's a DVD, so it'd be hard to miss anything since you can watch it a zillion times if you want.
I didn't like all the American VA's in Kingdom Hearts, but it certainly didn't ruin the game for me. The Japanese VA's are very good, especially Maaya Sakamoto as Aerith - I think she's just perfect, and I'd much rather listen to her as Aerith than Mandy Moore again. :puke: I thought Lance Bass was horrible as Sephiroth, too. But poor VA's didn't ruin the game for me, nor did it ruin their appearances in KH. I loved Steve Burton as Cloud, but I like his Japanese VA, too.
Either way is fine with me.

Aeris and Cloud: :lmao:

Ooh, I agree. <_< I HATED the voice actors picked for the Final Fantasy characters in Kingdom Hearts. Lance Bass for Sephiroth??? I mean, what drunken moron made that decision??? The only Final Fantasy voice actor that was worth a flip in that game was Steve Burton, who was Cloud. He had a very nice voice and appeared to have a good grasp of Cloud's angsty-ness. :D
All of the Disney voice actors were great, of course, because most of them were the original voices from the movies. And Haley Joel Osment was terrific as Sora. ^_^ It was just the FF actors who sucked.
Fusion - June 11, 2005 11:03 PM (GMT)
arg.
I agree, the FF VA's on Kingdom Hearts sucked majorly. What was up with Yuffie's voice? Thats not what I pictured at all. *shakes head* I want English VA's on AC, so long as they do some work and find some decent ones
*jumps up and down raising hand*
I'd be more than happy to lend my voice for Aeris *dreams*
lol I did get the Theatre Arts award (dunno how tho)
Anastar - June 11, 2005 11:18 PM (GMT)
I liked David Boreanz as Squall, and I loved Steve Burton as Cloud. I really want Maaya Sakamoto to be Aerith in the English version as well as the Japanese version.
Did you see that Kitase said the same voice actors will be used throughout the Compilation? So whichever VA's they pick for AC, the same will be used in DC and CC.

In that case, puuurrrfect
Sefie - June 13, 2005 04:53 PM (GMT)
That's a very good thing. I wouldn't want the characters' voices changing
Kaldea - June 13, 2005 11:42 PM (GMT)
Yeah, it would lose it's genuine feel to me if they did.
Clerith-son - June 14, 2005 12:07 AM (GMT)
I don't now if you, but I liked Mandy Moore as Aerith's voice.
Kaldea - June 14, 2005 12:13 AM (GMT)
I said my opinion on her horridly childish voice enough in the Dub Club.

I've brought up Maaya before, good to know someone agrees!! :D And I wouldn't mind it if they picked Steve Burton as Cloud again, he did a pretty good job in KH. ;)
Meikyo - June 16, 2005 03:49 AM (GMT)
:) I thought Steve Burton was a really good voice for Cloud.
I think I would prefer subtitles.....for japanese voices, I've had no problem with listening to them.
x_x I think I'm just scared of an incident happening again like the VAs they chose for FFX. Can you remember Tidus and his English VA? ^^;;;;;; I swear, I think there was no emotion in his voice AT ALL. ^^;
.....wait, is there even an option to turn on subtitles and turn on japanese in the DVD? o_O" -goes off to search for answer +_+-
I just hope they choose veeeeeerrrrrrry carefully for good VAs. ^^;
