Crisis Core - Final Fantasy VII E3 2005 Impressions


While once each Final Fantasy game stood on its own, Square Enix has increasingly shown a willingness to revisit the worlds of certain games. A good example is what the company calls its Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, which includes the Advent Children movie in development, the Before Crisis game for mobile phones, and the upcoming Vincent-rich Dirge of Cerberus for the PlayStiaton 2. Crisis Core - Final Fantasy VII is another game in the mix, an upcoming PlayStation Portable action role-playing game that Square Enix promises will "exceed the expectations of fans."

There aren't many details about the game available, but Square Enix did show an animated concept trailer. The trailer revolved around Zack, the soldier who fought alongside Cloud before the events of the original Final Fantasy VII. It showed a rendering of the Final Fantasy VII bit where Zack and Cloud spoke together, interspersed with images of Sephiroth going mad in Nibelheim and many scenes of Zack in battle. This suggests that Crisis Core will be a prequel to its source material, with Zack as the main character.

We'll continue to relate news about Crisis Core as it is made available, so keep watching this gamespace for details.

Interesting stuff, CG, thanks for the info! :huggle: I've always been partial to Zack, so I really hope he is the main character in Crisis Core. I'd love to learn more about the type of person he was. We can draw conclusions from other characters' memories of him, but I'd like to see for myself. :)

I'd love to see more of Zack as well, and it's be fantastic if he could get his own game. From what we see of him in FFVII, he struck me as a very Zidane-ish type of guy, but it'd be great to learn more about him through the game. I bet he'd make a brilliant main character. ^_^

In AP Literature we learned about a tool used in writing. I can't remember the name of it, but it's a character that has a huge effect on the plot, but very little(if any at all) screen time. In FFVII, that was definatly Zack. So, I'm not sure if I want that destroyed

You have a very good point there, Sefie. He has huge influence, but he does no action at all in the present. One of the reasons why he's so interesting is because we know so little about him, I can see how this might ruin his mystery (I feel kinda similar about Dirge of Ceberus, and what it'll reveal about Vincent's past - I'd prefer to speculate, you know?).

I haven'y been here in FOREVER. Heh, but I think it would be too much like BC if it was a prequel. Why make two prequels? Maybe it'll be kinda like a prequel, but maybe it'll start before the five years that BC starts at. I mean, ALL of Zacks life, not just those five years. I'd really like to see what happened inside the reactor when Zack fought Sephiroth. All we saw was him flying the door way. Now all I have to do is get a PSP...heh...

I thought when it was first announced, it was said that it was going to be after AC?

Actually, I'm hoping we get to go into a separate sidestory for each of the characters. I don't want to know what happened to Sephiroth from Zack's perspective, I want it from the General himself.

Having Zack as the main character would be so awesome! I've always liked him more than Cloud anyway... Well, I guess that would explain why I love Zidane so much. Really, for such an interesting character, Zack doesn't get enough screen time. Cloud's gotten quite enough already.

Ya know what'd be neat? If it were a game about Cloud discovering stuff.
It was said that this game's going to be crucial to the compilation, and it's going to explore the relationship of those three men and that one mysterious woman, so it'd make sense.

You know what sucks? The OVA about the Nibelheim fire. Somehow I get the feeling it's building hype for Crisis Core... in which case it would really suck because there seems to be the only girl there: Tifa. I wish Summoner Yuna could differentiate Aerith's and Tifa's voices really well. Gah, if it's Tifa then I'll just be saving lots of money, that's all. :rolleyes:

Its a waste to have a game on that event. Its so small and what is most important is the development before that.. ;__;
There needs to be more background stories of all the other characters...
The story of the Cetras has so much potential, and was so little explored in FFVII. If they had something to give a clearer idea of this 'promise land' and way they live, that'd be good. Ah well, I just hope that's just a trailer to show the general idea of it and not the main idea...

I think it will just be following Zack with the events in his life. The Nibelheim event was a big one for him so of course they will spend time on it. But I am sure they will go into how him and Aeris met, etc. If Zack is the main character, they will be focusing on him and what happened to him. I'm not worried. ^_^

Yeah, Zack is the main character. It should all forcus on him, right? I can't imagine him having said more than 10 lines to Tifa. Besides, the woman does mention a past relationship. Tifa barely ever spoke to Cloud before the events of FFVII, I wouldn't call that much of a relationship. *crosses fingers and hopes*

And the woman talks about "the last time I saw him". "Him" would most likely referring to the main character, so "him" is probably Zack, so the voice is likely Aerith's voice.

Although the OVA is supposed to be separate from AC, I would expect that the experimentation done in Nibelheim would reveal something about the origin of the SHM. It'd make sense to include an OVA about that with the Ultimate Edition.

I'd much rather see something done about Aerith and the Ancients, though. :(

Yeah, I'm pretty bummed about the OVA, too. How many times do we need to see the Nibelheim fire, really? It's so overplayed, I'd rather watch something brand new. Even how Red XIII managed to revive his tribe would excite me more than a rehash of the fire. C'mon, even BC has it. I thought that was already enough. In fact, it simply looks like that chapter of BC: anime-style.

Red XIII's story would be a lot more interesting. I think it has a lot to do with who's popular character. Vincent, although secret, became really popular, so they made a whole game of him. And Zack/Cloud/Sephiroth is popular too. Zack especially is popular for the amount of mention of him in FFVII...which was little. And I guess the time they are all together is in Nibelheim. *sigh I think they forgot about the main story in FFVII since it doesn't seem to be attempted to be more explored...
