Title: Strange Emails
Description: ???
Sefie - May 10, 2005 03:22 PM (GMT)
I've received two strange emails in my Junk folder. The first was from ffmemorial@hotmail.com and the second was from tifa_heart@something
Both had attatchments that were blocked, and both just said "Your product" or something like that
Anyone else gotten anything like that?

Spam mail, trash mail..call it whatever you wish. Never open them as they contain viruses, spyware and god knows what. Delete them without a doubt.
And what goes for the name, these things are getting more and more clever all the time, and will use names, websites and such that are familiar to you in order to lure you into opening the attachments. I'm not sure how, but perhaps someone else can explain how they work.

They may be in forums you're in and mail you with a fake email adress that has something to do with the forums. If its no one from here then don't open them. Always check it out first. ^_^

Teehee, c'mon guys. I don't open attachments from anyone I don't know! I'm not THAT naieve!
It creeps me out that they can create names based on what I look at...they're believeable names too. Creeptacular

I've been getting really annoying ads in my email. I growl, get annoyed, and delete them ASAP.

Actually Sefie, they're programs called "spiders" or "spiderbots." What they do is they go through a website of any kind (forums, image service, anything) and collect all of the email addresses in the database. It can then do basically anything with those addresses. Although rare, there have been some nasty ones that have worked in conjunction with viruses. It seems it (and/or it's programmer(s)) decided to use other peoples email addresses from a website you visited to send you something.
I hope this clarifies a few things...

Usually most databases (like fanlistings, etc.) protect your e-mail address with javascript, so that should be no problem. I do wonder how they got it though. :/

I remember a few months ago, someone was using my e-maila ddress to send viruses to hudnreds of people. They'd send them strange e-mails and contained a virus inside it. Then the e-mails were sent back to me to let me know it was sending e-maisl containing a virus. I got hundreds back each day telling me my e-mail address was sending viruses. It sent them to companies, people, fans of things. Not to mention the message inside was strange. I took the time to e-mail each of those hundreds of people the virus was sent to to tell them it wasn't me and warn them. I enver got a response to any. Plus the message sinside were weird. It's so frustrating when people use my e-mail to send viruses and weird messages to people. It wasn't this case though, sin ce thos eweren't my addresses.

Actually, it could be a huge problem. Javascript isn't a very secure programming language...
