Title: Rufus Shinra Is Not Gay!
Tifa Lockheart - April 28, 2005 09:57 AM (GMT)
...Rufus ShinRa is neither gay nor bisexual.
If you believe that Rufus ShinRa is not gay/bisexual (meaning, he's straight or maybe you think that he's not gay but he's just metrosexual) and you despise all or some of the YAOI pairings regarding Rufus ShinRa (like RufusxSephiroth, RufusxCloud, RufusxReno, RufusxTseng, RufusxReeve, RufusxVincent, Rufusxwhoever guy), then this club is for you.

Of course he's not gay! He's bisexual, it's so obvious. :P

Ooh. Me wants to join. Me thinks he's just vain. :D
Hyper-Ballad - April 28, 2005 04:03 PM (GMT)
I think if you really wanted to slash him with someone, you could make a case for it seeing as he never shows any interest in a woman...but realistically? I think the idea of gay-Rufus is just wishful thinking on the fangirls' part. I've yet to see any evidence that he prefers guys, and seeing him paired up with all the guys listed does absolutely nothing for me (and in Tseng and Reeve's case, it makes me pretty mad)...so yeah. I guess I'm fit for this club. Count me in! :P

I'm joining.
I have never seen any scene in the game where someone would assume his sexual prefference as gay. <_<
Somehow any Yaoi pairing with Rufus kind of reminds me of Riku/Sora. :puke: The thing is, both are just creations of the warped and demented minds of disgusting insane fangirls. :puke: :lmao:
Mira - April 28, 2005 11:05 PM (GMT)
I HATE those rabid Yaoi fangirls who pair up two guys for the most SHALLOW reasons. To me, that's just as BAD as CloudxTifa, because you're warping characteristics and such just to fit their stupid preference for "hawt B0YZ S3ckz0rZ". So... count me in. <_<

We should turn this into a Cloud/Vincent/Sephiroth/Rufus/Tseng/Reeve/Reno/Zack Aren't Gay club. I can't stand seeing them warped into sex maniacs to fit the horny fangirls' fantasies  Especially if any of these involve kittycat costumes :puke:
Andina - April 29, 2005 02:45 PM (GMT)
Is the reason why you are so against Rufie being gay because you (not so) secretly wish that he could be your (extremely heterosexual) lover. :P
Ehm, but there is no indication to any direction in the game. So for all we know he could be anything. Gay, straight, bi or even into animals...Nanaki better watch out.
My point is that he is what we wish him to be, like so many other video game characters. So until Square confirms that he indeed is straight like you all rave about, Rufie will always be my little bisexual lover! So bring on the hot yaoi sex scenes with :cloud: and Vincent, darn it!

Seriously, I didn't mean to have a go at you. There are a lot of aspects of the Rabid Yaoi Fangirl's attitude towards the characters and their writing that I dislike, but I'm thinking of a different type of yaoi-fangirl, if you know what I mean. Sorry if I was generalising, but I was just venting. :gift:

Hehe, in my case the answer would actually be "no". As much as his character interests me, I'm not very keen on reading/writing 'fics that pair him up with anyone. But you're right that the game gives us no indication of his sexual preference either way, so it's all up for speculation. It actually annoys me much more when a character who is definitely and canonically interested in girls is slashed. But it also irks me when writers disregard a character's personality and turns Character A into his Character B's bitch or a horny dog running after and trying to hump Character C, when none of these sexual dynamics reflect the original characterization, you know?
But whatever problems I have with yaoi; it'll never make me as furious as RAPE/LOVE 'FICS! The horror! :puke:

It's called fantasy...or would you rather read a fic where the hero/heroine goes to see a therapist twice a week to get over his problems? I suppose that would be realistic if nothing else. ^_^
Nay! Hot love making cures everything! :P

I wanna join cause I don't think he's gay, bi or hetero, I think he's just a character made to be some evil guy, President of a huge corporation, who's role is torment the heroes, not fall for them. I like RufusxTifa, but I don't think he'll have love at love. And I bet he doesn't even want it.

I started this thread as an initial campaign for people who do not really appreciate extreme YAOI or shounen-ai. What you're totally saying in this thread is rather offensive to me and I don't appreciate it. I'm trying to say this as nicely as I can because I dislike further arguments.
Now don't get me wrong but I am not totally against this because I support some YAOI pairings myself.
And as for your initial question, no. I am not that kind of cheap fangirl who pairs up herself with a non-existent/fictional character. And I'm not saying that Rufus is not gay just because I like him with Tifa or whoever girl I can think of, even Aerith herself. I'm just saying that Rufus is not gay in contrast to those who think he is gay/bi/whatever.
You wish for him to be gay/bi/whatever, I have nothing against that but please respect the preference of the other people here who think that he is not. <_<
No hard feelings, girl.

I could care less what people think, are or believe in, and you would understand why if you would know me.
Everchanging - May 2, 2005 11:39 AM (GMT)
I'm not to bothered with the rampant scary fangirls that mischarctirise chracters in the game and those scary rape fic's etc, as long as they are aware of what their doing, and make their reader aware-I don't like the idea of people reading it and thinking that Sephiroth viagra addict or Cloud is everyones bitch e.t.c (which he ends up being even in the most realistic fic's anyway @__@), and don't delude themselves into thinking what their doing is noble, and just admit their a bit pervy and its all weird twisted smut. Than I'm fine with it.
It's just-that rarely happens.
Anyway, I just look on the lighthearted side of this really. Rufus is simply Rufus. He doesn't show that his gay at all in the game. I mean the with the way he acts, you wonder if he ever thinks about sex at all.
Unless he's conversation with Cloud on the roof was an elaborate scheme to get into his pants.
Kusari Yarou - May 2, 2005 05:07 PM (GMT)
Erm, yeah, I think lots of yaoi fangirls would see it that way. Anything for a bit of 'evidence'.
Looking at it from an objective viewpoint, I guess Sephiroth/Cloud rapefics and the like would be aesthetically pleasing to some fangirls. I just don't have that much of an 'open mind' and have very strong opinions against such fics. Two pretty boys can look good together and during those times when I venture into shonen-ai/yaoi, I prefer that the emotional be favored over the physical. Most fangirls prefer it the other way around...that's their preference and I can't change that.
But...but...bbbut...what is up with dressing bishies in kittycat outfits?!!
Everchanging - May 3, 2005 07:12 AM (GMT)
I prefer the more emotionally and approaitely handled fic's myself, which is why I learned quickly where to go and what scary places not to go. Though everyone has their preferences, as long as the scary fangirls don't brag, and make everyone aware of their perversion, as well as themselves, I'm fine. It's just as I said, it rarely happens. Which does grates me too, but it also amuses me.
I always found it quite sad though that Rufus is either put in yaoi or paired up with orignial characters most of the time. Tifa and Rufus is a cool pairing. I always kinda like Rufus and Scarlet too.

True, Everchanging. He could be into farmyard animals for all the evidence we're given in the game... :ermm:

Personally, I don't think that that matters, Andina. ^_^ I just don't see "what makes good reading" as factoring into it at all. It just offends me to see the trauma of rape magically taken away by the power of The Boyfriend's Healing Penis. It disgusts me so much to see rape and its aftermath so inappropriately, insensitively and unrealistically handled in fanfiction. <_<
Allow me to rant on a bit more on this topic...
Rape is an act of violence, not love or lust. It's not romantic, it's not sexy. It's one of the most brutal, disgusting and shattering things you can do to another person. That's why I don't think it belongs in pairing-fics at all. It shouldn't arouse people and it shouldn't be used as a prelude to a beautiful and healthy relationship between two characters.
Of course, it's something that can be dealt-with effectively in fanfiction, but it rarely ever is. In my experience I've seen the idea of rape used either for hentai thrills, an excuse for cheap angst, hurt/comfort, or worst of all, the foundations of a rapist/victim love-story. I find all of that offensive and sickening. I know I'm probably sounding like I'm taking this too seriously, but for me rape is a very serious subject and seeing this horrific experience used to turn-on horny fanboys and disturbed fangirls is a disgrace. Part of me really thinks that these authors should serve mandatory duty at a rape crisis center so they can see firsthand what rape actually does to people and why instantly getting over it or falling in love with their attacker is an insult to what some people go through.
Andina - May 20, 2005 12:49 AM (GMT)
You people can be so cute at times. ^_^
It's just a matter of taste, sweeties, as always. But do not get me wrong, the situations I wish to see Cloud in do not apply to real life in most cases, as I do have my limits. So as I do not judge you, you should not judge me or those who write fictions that do not appeal to you.
Now carry on and adore Rufus as you should. :P
Hyper-Ballad - May 20, 2005 03:24 AM (GMT)
Sorry Andina, I'm a little calmer now.
I wasn't intentionally passing judgement or aiming the bulk of that rant at you (I have no idea what sort of fiction you read and/or write, after all) and if I've offended you then I'm sorry. It's a little difficult for me to tell if I'm actually being rude towards you because your responses are always so...open to interpretation. :P Please, if you think I'm being a pig do tell me. It's the only way I'll learn. ^_^
I don't usually read fanfics I know I'll hate and it annoys me to see people who do just that and then blame the author...but just to read a summary like: "Aeris is abducted and raped by Sephiroth...but can their love still blossom?" gives a lot of information all by itself.
About fanfiction/reality; it just baffles me how a writer/reader can find a violent rape arousing in fiction and then be horrified by it in reality. I understand that it's all down to people's personal fantasies and sexuality and that it's wrong to say that anyone's taste when confined to their private lives in any way wrong or bad. However dark a person's fantasies are, it doesn't make them a bad person. Sexual fantasy is perfectly healthy and it's far healthier to indulge than repress...but I suppose that rape is a very sensitive subject for me, and it's something I dislike seeing treated so...lightly, you know? Even seeing a fictional character raped is far from pleasant for me. Because I feel the violence of it more than any sexual aspect, it's very difficult for me to understand the appeal of it. For me, I just can't detach myself from the reality of rape to find a fantastical version of the act (however much the victim may end up enjoying it) appealling. It just worries me to think that a lot of people seem to be in the dark about the reality of it and its lasting effects on a person, that's all.
But if you'd care to elaborate on what you personally think, I'd be happy to hear it. ^_^
Like I said, I know I'm being serious when fandom and fanfiction are very playful sorts of things by nature, but it's just that this is something I tend to take very seriously. And it brings out uncontrollable rants sometimes.
[Insert Rufus-adoration here]

I think of that every time I come across once of those sick fanfics/doujinshi. <_<
Everchanging - May 20, 2005 03:40 AM (GMT)
I wouldn't know much about decent fanfcition writting. I'm not like much Cloris' and mine has the same quality as Cloti's.
Kusari Yarou - May 20, 2005 05:25 AM (GMT)
I think what I don't like about rape fanfiction(besides the hentai-ness of most of it) is when authors turn any random character into a rapist. It's fine if that character really does have rapist tendencies or is really psychotic. I would believe that he were capable of rape if he were, say, Sephiroth or Muraki Kazutaka(from Yami no Matsuei). But when nice, friendly guys start banging their poor victims, then I have a problem. Especially if fanfic writers just blame it on the hormones.
And as for the victim falling in love with the rapist, I don't like the fact that the victim would put his pride down and let it get dirtied so easily. His dignity has already been violated by the rape and he makes it worse by begging the rapist for more! The concept just bothers me :(
Everchanging - May 20, 2005 09:29 AM (GMT)
Doesn't make much sense in my opinon either. I hope that fangirls learn to label their fic's honestly so you know which little wankfests to avoid and which realitisticly portrayed ones to read. Though I was impressed by how utterly disturbing, and awful one was to read because of how realistic it was, and I nodded sagely thinking, yes, that is what rape is like. And OOCness is a common factor in yaoi fic's too. That needs to be fixed. Sheesh, people overall are just scary aren't they really.
Starlight Night - May 20, 2005 10:45 AM (GMT)
If you think Rufus is gay...
Have you seen Symore from Final Fantasy 10?! Now that's gay.
But from what I know he isn't. He's just made to be evil.
BUT from what I think he might be. If he is, it's his buissness not mine.
Kusari Yarou - May 20, 2005 10:51 AM (GMT)
Well, I always thought Kuja from FF9 looked gay!
But he kept hitting on Garnet so I guess he isn't.
Andina - May 20, 2005 10:53 AM (GMT)

Carmencita - May 22, 2005 06:08 AM (GMT)
Hm, Kuja... Androgyne. Does that mean he prefers men? And Rufus isn't gay, at most I think he's a metrosexual.
Rape fics could be interesting, even if it involves characters that aren't likely to rape people as rapists... you could do anything to the character's personalities with fics and make them passable, especially if you're a talented writer. But then again, from what I've heard so far, rape fics are tasteless sex-fests, so.... :puke:

I actually really dislike this "What if ___ was a rapist and ___ was his victim?" aspect in rape-fics, because it usually involves butchering male characters into brutal rapists at the drop of a hat. OOC is OOC, however you choose to look at it. And if I were a man, I'd be pretty damn frustrated at constantly being portrayed in fanfics as The Gender Who Commits Rape Whenever A Chance Is Available. The idea that male characters are easy to transform into rapists just because they're men is both highly sexist and very disgusting. <_<

Ah, my beloved Kuja...I could rant on about his sexuality all day...
Carmencita - May 23, 2005 01:18 PM (GMT)
Hm, tough. OOC is perfectly fine with me. In my opinion, a character in fanfiction can't be perfectly in-character. As long as the characters are still believable (ie. you don't go as overboard and as distasteful as that lovely Cloti fic we all know and "love"), and the story is good, why not? :D
