Hackers Attack Square Enix
04.18.05 - 8:43 PM

Square Enix today announced, that a hacker attack on April 15th at approximately 09:00 pm JST led to a shutdown of all Final Fantasy XI servers. It took the company three hours to bring the servers of its popular MMORPG back online.

The company has submitted a report of damages to police authorities in Tokyo and is examining legal steps against the attackers. The so-called Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks had already began on April 9th, before the servers collapsed under the heavy cyber fire last weekend. Since DDoS attacks rely on a large number of computers to deliver a very large amount of data to make the targetted server collapse, legally pursuing specific hackers might be difficult.

While the attacks have become irregular, they apparently still continue. As a first reaction, Square Enix is re-inforcing its network infrastructure and looking at legal options.

Well I seriously hope they catch whoever it was and severly punish him. Cyber terrorism is becoming such a huge problem, espcially to large companies such as Square-Enix.

ugh that's awful! People really need to start getting hobbies instead of wasting their time to discover new ways to screw up companies. I mean, what's the point? What kind of satisfaction could that bring?

Maybe the Clotis are trying to find a life online even more in learning how to hack since real lives are non-existant.

I wonder why people would even WANT to do something like that. Seriously, what good does it get them? Does it give them some form of sick satisfaction for "bringing down" the Square-Enix servers?

I think Square should find a way to fight back electronically. If anyone could find a way to do that, Square probably could. Like - program the server to recognize DDoS attacks. When one happens, the server sends it back to the hacker.

Poor Square. I wonder why someone would bother doing this - it saps up time and brain power which could be used for more progressive things, like world peace. -_- Besides, bringing down the server for FFXI would be an inconvenience for all those other players.

 An outrageous idea. I was just saying it would be cool if Square could figure out how to make their own computers send a virus back to the hackers.

Though we often associate Hacking with criminal activities. Hacking does not always mean breaking into computers though.

Hacking can be just to find out how something works without criminal intent.
Hacking can be simply to crack a code -Kevin Mitnick

Someone's hacking TLB and deleting all their nastiness

I they they where hacked again not long ago  I remeber the servers going down and hearing they had been attacked. Really dont get why people do that, to cause frustration? Most people think it's usually a banned player doing it but could be anyone.
Poor SE, they get serious stick when the players cant..play for hours, the hackers themselves are somewhat ignored.

*Glomps the CaitSith server* be nice to them!
