Sky Unlimited’s Messerschmitt BF109F

Reviewed by Ludo Lambrechts

After aircraft such as the Spitfire by Realair, and the Mustang by the Classic Warbirds Design Team where released, the flight simulation community called for a high quality Messerschmitt BF109F add-on. Apparently someone at a little known Payware company called Sky Unlimited heard these calls. Now that the BF109F has been released simmers are asking if it’s as good as other such as Captain Sim’s Yak-3. I will try to answer most of those questions in this review.

I myself was very excited about this release as I am a huge fan of World War II fighter planes. After finishing the installation process which Sky Unlimited made a breeze, I couldn’t be kept from the skies to test my new toy.

As I was selecting my aircraft in the main menu I found that my biggest challenge was selecting the livery. Along with this aircraft Sky Unlimited has included an incredible amount of repaints. All textures are done beautifully and very realistically. Much time and effort has been put into ensuring you’ll fly something different each time.

A texture has no meaning without a good model. The details put into the model are astonishing and well presented. All distinct features that made the BF109F unique have been recreated with the finest of detail. Along with great exterior detail comes a great extra. Using the “wings-fold” button the engine cover is removed to reveal a nicely detailed Daimler-Benz DB600 engine. The exterior model is one of the main highlights of this package.

I have already said the exterior model is great, but every coin has two sides to it, and an aircraft has an interior and an exterior. The Messerschmitt BF109F was not very roomy on the inside, and Sky Unlimited faced this challenge when creating the interior. The developers from Sky Unlimited did a great job on the 2D panel as it is accurately created with photorealistic texturing, but the virtual cockpit raised an eyebrow. The panel in the virtual cockpit looks very plain and has a lack of detail. Fortunately enough the virtual cockpit has great wing views that make up for the lack of detail elsewhere.

The BF109F being explosive and dangerous as it was created a distinct roar. The sound would be very important with an aircraft such as this. Sky Unlimited did not fail us here. When you’re flying the Messerschmitt BF109F you can feel the tremble in your joystick, and hear the power driving this fighter. This sound package creates a great flying experience.

Dog fighting with lag on your side will cause in you being shot down. Even though you won’t be dog fighting in Microsoft Game’s Flight Simulator 2004 you still need a lag-free experience to thoroughly enjoy this add-on aircraft. Sky Unlimited’s Messerschmitt BF109F had a little bit of lag with it. Although it’s not a slideshow the BF109F is made more difficult to fly at times.

All in all the Messerschmitt BF109F by Sky Unlimited is a good plane to fly. Everyone will enjoy this add-on and at $19.99USD it is also a great value. With a little bit of work on the virtual cockpit Sky Unlimited could turn this aircraft into an “excellent” add-on. I would give Sky Unlimited 8.5 out of 10 for their work on the Messerschmitt BF109F.

Happy flying

I have to agree with you, the exterior model looks very nice (Any interior ones?)
And the paint you used in the pictures looks very realistic, nice score too... But how is it on the frames?

Nice review Ludo, it looks like it's a blast to fly, and worth $19.99 but as I've said before I have to
admit I'd sooner go for the RealAir Spit'. BTW Georf, Ludo posted interior shots in the screenshots
forum I think.
