Title: Roleplay

Demson - February 28, 2005 06:59 PM (GMT)
What about it?

You Brąthair have tossed about allot of potential idea's. You seem to be well underway but what about the roleplay aspect?

In most mmo's this hasn't been a real game factor. Most mmorpg's have traditionally been a levelthreadmill. All that mattered was loot and levels. You kill/grind to become better to kill/grind more. Killing was the purpose. You didn't really have a role in the gameworld except to kill.

Roma Victor will be different. It will be more about industry, commerce, politics and diplomacy. It's pretty much like a real society. Player's will be concerned with their wealth and connections/friendships, not loot and levels. It's about your role in the world/society, not about killing.

Sure - there will be plenty of fighting going on in the arena's and outlands. But there's allot more to Roma Victor then that. Because fighting is no longer the purpose like in the traditional mmo's. Instead, it will have a purpose.

What about this aspect of the game? How will the Brąthair try to 'fit in' (if at all)? The gameworld is historically authentic after all.

:ph43r:

Well...ummm we are barbarians right? And our main aim is to become powerfull, right? And we are going to be a mainly warrior clan, right?

Seems like we will be a killing machine. :D

TB666 - February 28, 2005 09:06 PM (GMT)
Yeah, we are a elite warband, we are suppose to be good at fighting :ph43r: .

EeSang - February 28, 2005 11:00 PM (GMT)
Haha.. roleplaying. Not necessary and not always fun. Nevertheless it may make RV more enjoyable.

Xenophon - March 1, 2005 01:04 AM (GMT)
Aye like my friends said, we are a war band... so naturally killing will be a big factor. We will; however, have members who are devoted to other aspects (like me for example who is a diplomat and lore keeper of the guild). Though, I will participate in more than a few battles, I'll likely have my stats high in other areas than just the sword or bow. I know some of us are going to be blacksmiths, horse trainers, and farmers. These people likely dedicate most of their time in such areas, so technically we aren't the usual band of hack and slash fanatics.

On the flip side we are going to use the economics of the guild to build a better city, and get more npcs. Thus, become more powerful and respected. As for our other plans... you have to be a member to know them :)

If you want to apply, you should post in the recruiting section (barring that you haven't already). But I should warn you that we are likely to be taking the route of other mmorpg clans and have a raw recruit guild. We are trying to be an elite, so all free memberships are over, now it is time that you prove that you are worthy to call yourself a member (go's to everyone else reading too).

Whether you want to join or not, I hope to see in Roma Victor and my that day be gloriou, Xenophon.

You didn't see his signature? It looks like he's already devoted elsewhere.

wOrSt NiGhTmAre - March 1, 2005 04:15 AM (GMT)
it sure looks like he is devoted elsewhere. Not to jump to conclusions but it is good that you held your tongue from further plans Xeno. I have nothing against you Demson as that was a fairly thought provoking post but one can never be to careful. Especially when one will be fighting for power in the game soon enough :sensei

I think its self explanitory that I didn't see it. Too bad you got ties else where Demson it looks like you have a good head on your shoulders.

Of course, no need to worry about me flapping my tongue.

Back on-topic :D Roleplay will be much more natural in RV then in other mmorpg's. In other mmorpg's, there was a themed gameworld but no themed roles to play.

Take Star Wars Galaxies. Obviousily it had a very strong theme. Yet all the classes were as following: tanks, healers, buffers, damage dealers, grinders etc.. Sure - they wore the guise of 'smuggler' or 'doctor' or 'artisan'. But that was just appearance. Your real role as a brawler was as tank, your real role as marksmen was as damage dealer. Your role had nothing to do with Star Wars theme, but with the level threadmill.

Roles in Roma Victor will be different. Because of the nature of the gameplay (costly death, tradeskills, skill degration, real-time combat etc.), there won't be tanks and healers etc. Your role will be defined by what you do. Do you make a living by smithing? Then others will recognise you as a smith. Do you make a living by duals? Then you are a warrior.

Roma Victor won't be like other gameworlds. Think of it as a virtual world with a real society. Roleplaying won't be something you decide to do. It's part of the gameplay.

What's important in Roma Victor is the historical theme. Your role will be a role in the society of the Roman Empire in 180 AD.

There were no 'Conan the barbarians' in the Roman Empire. Barbarian civilisations were really very similar to the Roman Empire. They were just technologically less advanced. Which is why there was a Roman Empire, not a Gaullic or Germanic one.

You want the role of a killing machine in order to become powerful. Fine. That happened allot 180 AD. What I want to point out is the context of that role.

Will you, in the game, act as a bunch of hormone raged, 21-century adolescenes who want to go on a killing spree (kind of like me :P ) and thus decided your role would be a barbarian one?

Or will you try to pose as an authentic Germanic or Gaul from 180 AD, with authentic motives and history?

TB666 - March 1, 2005 02:10 PM (GMT)
Well I wanted to be barbarian because I wanted the freedom instead of being a slave under the emperor.
My thirst for blood is just my nature :barb .
Besides it is easier to be authentic being a warband then it is being a roman legion.

wOrSt NiGhTmAre - March 2, 2005 03:25 AM (GMT)
good call TB666. By the way Demson, why are you trying to explain how we should play the game?

Demson - March 2, 2005 09:18 AM (GMT)

I'm not telling you how you should play the game.

I'm asking you.

al_ - March 2, 2005 10:59 AM (GMT)
Well my answer is no.

Lhorkan - March 2, 2005 01:55 PM (GMT)
I like role-playing, I played MUDs where everyone had to roleplay. Actually I like roleplaying communities much more than some raging noobs who simply want to master their skills.

I'll try to roleplay as much as possible in the game.

And BTW, nice signature Demson :)

Honduras - March 2, 2005 05:21 PM (GMT)
I'll also try to roleplay.

Mordhak - March 2, 2005 08:06 PM (GMT)
I'll simply be myself. If that's roleplay or non-roleplay, well, we'll see :)

Xenophon - March 2, 2005 11:43 PM (GMT)
I'll do somerole playing. I think it is more fun if people try and stick to their characters roles.

But, seriously why are you coming to our guild to 'ask us' to role play? Did they boot you out for doing the same thing over at your clan?

Anyways, nice ideas, but I'm going to play Roma Victor the way I want to, and I'm sure the others here feel the same way roleplaying or not.

wOrSt NiGhTmAre - March 3, 2005 04:19 AM (GMT)
Well said Xeno, we will all play to our own style, we dont necessarily need someone to ask us how we will play. If it is that important to you anyways you will get to see soon enough in RV

Demson - March 3, 2005 08:50 AM (GMT)

I'm asking you because I'm curious. Really - is that a crime?

If I'm not allowed to ask questions out of interest, just say so and I won't bother you anymore.

I guess I should answer my own question too, heh.

I like roleplaying, but only if it's practical to do. There really are allot of different forms of roleplay, but I roleplay to keep gameplay fresh and have something creative to do with my friends. Making 10.000 swords or killing 10.000 bandits get's a bit boring after a while, so roleplay can be allot of fun.

In RV, I will be a harcore roleplayer. I'll create a Celtic persona and try not to leave my role.

Thanks, it's Moonlapse' work. He's a genius with PSP and photoshop. It's also a link when you click on it, btw.

al_ - March 3, 2005 09:28 AM (GMT)
Before you call people noobs because they don't like an idea Lhorkan get your facts right. Role playing might be more popular in your culture, in mine we tend to form our own characters. We don't need to pretend we're someone stronger or better than ourselves.

Lhorkan - March 3, 2005 03:51 PM (GMT)
Ok Al, read again:

Of course you may tend your own character, that's also a form a roleplaying, the one I actually meant. I espacially meant people who come online and shout "u saw taht soccr match lsat night??!!!1 It f***ing r00xx00000000rs!!!!111"

Not at all, but it did sound like you where more than suggesting.

Ask away, but next time try being a little less 'purposeful' in your post

 To me, those to sentences look almost identical, just one is a bit nicer way of saying how we should play the game.

I'm sorry if I came around as snappy, but I'm tired of people telling me how play/use the stuff I paid for, which is exactly what I thought you where doing.

Lhorkan, Al let it die guys. No need to go off on each other because of a simple mistake. Its clear that Lhorkan meant that he prefers game players that roleplay, and its equally as clear that Al misinterepted Lhorkans post. I hope this dosen't turn out to be like choosing our name in Legio Leonis... I got ugly after a while.

Anyways, I was wondering if any people where going to speak latin in the game? I think it would be a cool experiance talking to someone completely in Latin. Hmmm maybe someone can teach us  Wouldn't that sound like fun, eh Mordhak :D

I admit it came out akward. My apologies. But please realise that I was as thrown back (by the response) as much as you were.

I'm not sure how I am 'purposeful', but I'll try to remember it anyway.

No offense taken about the snappy bit. The mood was becoming a bit too stingy for my taste though.

Enough about that.

/hands out beer for everyone

I agree, lets just drink instead of picking each other apart *raises mug and taps Demsons* Here, Here

Don't even think of it :D

We'll have more on a dictionary than on Mordhak's "great" knowledge of latin :barb

:D

Capo of Arabia - March 6, 2005 07:36 PM (GMT)
i dont think i have to role play
my role is pretty much myself.

wOrSt NiGhTmAre - March 9, 2005 03:41 AM (GMT)
everybody can do what they want as long as they are benefitting the guild

Xenophon - May 15, 2005 12:30 AM (GMT)
I have been thinking about Roleplay a bit and it has come to me that it will be pretty hard to play Roma Victor without roleplaying at least a little bit.

It might be interesting if we acted, somtimes, like people back then did.

ie- "Get over hear ye hag, fore I whack you one"

"Kiss my arse ye roman worm"

NulliSecundus - May 15, 2005 12:33 AM (GMT)
That'd be fun, yelling insults at romans that is.

Xenophon - May 15, 2005 12:52 AM (GMT)
Meh, Romans or fellow guildmembers is equal fun so long as it is funny and/or witty.

None of "your mommy is so___" and those like it.

Edit Nulli- you back from holidays??
