Title: Xeno's Computer
Description: What should he upgrade?
Xenophon - August 4, 2005 10:13 PM (GMT)
Just like the title suggests what should I do with my Computer?
I currently have:
-AMDAthlon 64 Processor 3000+
- 2.00 GHz, 1.00 GB of ram
- NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200
- Sound Max Audio
I am probably going to get NVIDIA Geforce 7200 GT when it comes out.
What about the sound card? What is the best one out there, and how much does it cost?
Anything else I should add to this beast?
What about fans, what is the best fans or cooling system out there? My computer always seems to get hot real fast.
Jolius - August 4, 2005 10:34 PM (GMT)
Well make sure to get enough fans. They are cheap enough. I need a new comp pretty soon as well look at this.
Pentium III 731 MHz
Geforce DDR grahpics card
400 something DDR ram.

Yeah, I've got an Athlon 64 same as yours Xeno. I'm thinking about putting in another fan, but because of my video card (Radeon 9600). Seems to get fairly hot and locks up, after say, a couple hours of RTW on med-high graphics, big unit sizes. Not buying an ATI again, their drivers stink..
Sound cards, I'm sorry I don't know much about. I've got an old... Sounds blaster I think, it's fairly old but works just fine, my speakers aren't the best anyway. Not much change in sound tech over the past couple years I believe.

:woot
About the 64, isn't that very expensive? And only 2 Ghz? <_<
Brennin Bark - August 5, 2005 07:57 AM (GMT)
Not too expensive, no. I don't recall exactly how much, but I shopped around, and I felt it offered the best performance to cost ratio. 2 ghz is fine, IMO. With most games the bottleneck is your video setup, not the processor, and I'm not playing too many top-end games right now anyway.

I feel your pain. I ugraded to my current system from P3, ~800 mhz. It was like my eyes were opened for the first time! Programs load faster, animatons run smoother, food tastes better... well... you get the idea.
Mordhak - August 5, 2005 08:04 AM (GMT)
Yeah, had the same feeling when I upgraded from a 300mHz to my current 1,3Ghz. I'm planning on upgrading real soon though, as soon as I got the money that is <_<
Brennin Bark - August 5, 2005 08:16 AM (GMT)
Aye that's the rub. I made sure I shopped around and got a good system, this one'll have to last me for a while. Probably the last one I'll buy until they come out with ones you can plug straight into your grey matter :D
Newegg.com's a good place to start for parts, just FYI. I'm sure you already know.
NulliSecundus - August 5, 2005 10:15 AM (GMT)
Alright I'm not really knowledgeable in this field but I can offer some advice, big cost does'nt necessarily mean big performance. You can get a good graphics/sound card for a fair price, no need paying 1000+ for a graphics card that has the same performance as a 200 dollar card.
Brennin Bark - August 5, 2005 10:21 AM (GMT)
Well, if you pay $1000 for a graphics card, it had better be a TON better than a $200 card. You do get what you pay for, generally speaking. Conversly, you're not going to find many $200 cards that will give the performance of a $1000 card. If you do find one, let me know.
NulliSecundus - August 5, 2005 10:41 AM (GMT)
Well PC monthly's number one card was a 278$ card, need I say more.
Mordhak - August 5, 2005 11:06 AM (GMT)
Graphic cards never cost more than $500, unless the salesman's trying to trick you out.

Mordhak - August 5, 2005 11:19 AM (GMT)
Hmm well those are the salesmen trying to trick you
Brennin Bark - August 5, 2005 11:32 AM (GMT)
I dunno, does sound like a hell of a card. Water cooled and everything.
"5900 Ultra graphics processor capable of overclocking beyond 500MHz and comes equipped with 256MB of DDR SDRAM able to function at over 950MHz."
The ram can clock in faster than Jolius' CPU!
This thing's a monster. If one fell off the back of a truck I'd give it a spin. 100,000 man RTW battles here I come!

The best sound card right now is "Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro," which will run you about $200. I wouldn't go with anything that expensive unless you have a 7.1 setup with some serious watts.
Depending on your MoBo, I would either consider doing an SLI configuration (2 video cards) or get a new MoBo.
My Dream Machine:
Some big, sweet case full of fans.
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard ($164)
AMD Athlon 64 FX55 ClawHammer Integrated into Chip FSB Socket 939 Processor 2.6Ghz ($799)
2 GB dual channel ($245)
2x BFG Tech BFGR78256GTXOC Geforce 7800GTX 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card ($1120)
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro ($203)
Maxtor MaXLine III 7L300S0 300GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive ($175) (for storage)
Fujitsu MAU3073NC 73GB 15,000 RPM SCSI Ultra320 80pin Hard Drive ($439) (For boot drive)
Well, not that that's going to happen for me anytime soon. Just to give you an idea of what a badass computer is. Of course you have to add water cooling to everything.
