Title: Brennin
Description: application
Brennin Bark - August 3, 2005 07:55 AM (GMT)
Hello! I've just registered for the beta (not sure if they'll let me in, but can't hurt to apply here anyway). This looks to be a great game with a few tons of potential. A little about me...
I'm 24, Living in Ohio, USA. Cleveland to be exact (it's bad, but not as bad as most people think). I recently graduated with an associates degree in networking, working on a few certifications while working my skinny but off (third shift :duh: ). I'm a pretty active person, camp out a lot, I'm a drummer and part-time penny whistler (I listen to a lot of Irish traditional music, as well as modern agro-celt ie flogging molly, dropkick murpheys etc).
I'm very much into ancient history/ simulation. I haven't played that many MMO games (Asherons Call for a little while is about it) but the genre fascinates me, and I have the attention span to stick it out.
Other games I play include Rome and Medieval TW (RTR 6.0 just came out! whoop!). I was a beta tester for the Half-Life mod Day of Defeat as well as being on the Sturmbot (ai bots. sadly, defunct as our developer was lost in the tsunami) team for Day of Defeat. I've been playing Mount and Blade (www.taleworlds.com) and am an administrator on those forums (as Nairagorn. Hi Lhorkan!).
Some things I'd bring to the clan... I'm calm and mature with a good sense of humor. I'm a hound on research, if you want the skinny on something give me a little bit and I'll tell you anything you need to know. I'm easy going, both with noobs and as a noob. I don't power game. Even single player I'm playing more for the historical simulation than to win the game.
Any questions? I feel I'd make a good addition to the clan. I don't lust for uber-power (too much). I'd plan on my character being a simple farmer/woodsman, part time soldier. As I said, I haven't been picked for the beta yet so this may be a moot post, but, hey, ya never know.
Thanks, later!
Bthizle1 - August 3, 2005 09:15 AM (GMT)
I have but one question to ask:
Are you more of a military historian or more along the lines of general history (ie economics, architecture, politics etc.....)?
Brennin Bark - August 3, 2005 09:45 AM (GMT)
Pretty all-round. Military is generally easier to find info on, but both are of interest to me.
I wouldn't say I'm a historian by any means, that seems to imply a certain level of professionalism... I'm just an enthusiast really. Total book nerd :D
NulliSecundus - August 3, 2005 10:13 AM (GMT)
How active do you plan to be, not only playing RV (when it comes out) but visiting the forum/posting. Also, how did you come across our guild?
Brennin Bark - August 3, 2005 11:03 AM (GMT)
I can be pretty active, a couple hours a day in game at least. I work third shift, so I'll play when I get back from work, which means I can be on in the mornings eastern US time (7:00 am now, I get off of work at 9:30am)
I'm a fairly prolific poster, but I do try not to spam. Too much. I came across you guys when someone (Septus, a member of the Lupus and Aquila Corps) posted a link to RV on the Taleworlds website, and Lhorkan mentioned he was part of your guild. Said you try to keep out the 1337 kids and want a mature base. I thought, this may be right up my proverbial alley. That and I have a liking of the celtic/germanic scenario.
NulliSecundus - August 3, 2005 11:14 AM (GMT)
Interesting, do you have msn & a microphone?
Brennin Bark - August 3, 2005 11:27 AM (GMT)
I have a mic, I could set up MSN pretty easily, it's free right? I don't have any IM software on my 'puter at the moment.
NulliSecundus - August 3, 2005 11:31 AM (GMT)
Well I strongly suggest you set up a msn account, conversations can influence our vote in a big way.
Brennin Bark - August 3, 2005 11:36 AM (GMT)
Sounds good. I've got some stuff to do after work, so I may not get around to setting it up today, but I'll be sure to get an account and message you in the very near future.
Jolius - August 3, 2005 11:54 AM (GMT)
My MSN is sigerebar@haotmail.com btw
Back to my question. It sounds out like you just heard about the game recently. What are you planning or most interested in doing in game. Be it military or economic or both.
Brennin Bark - August 3, 2005 12:57 PM (GMT)
Both really, I only have a rough idea of what's possible in the game world, and I'd like to try out as much as possible. Hunting, building stuff, try my hand at being a warrior. I'm not a big fan of grinding at quests, but it sounds like this game may have a bit more to it than that. I intend to start as a farmer or hunter type, and see where I can go from there.
I've played Morrowind for quite a while, and some of the most fun I've had was with the farming mod... buy slaves, hire help and guards, upgrade the farm, maybe work my way up to a plantation. Not just hack and slash. That's fun, but can get repetitive. Like I said, I'm no power gamer.
::edit:: Heck, maybe I'll go into politics, see if I can start a revolution in Rome :P
Jolius - August 3, 2005 01:25 PM (GMT)
Well actually in this game there are no levels and you never see the mathematics. You don't see your hit points or your skills. Very realistic.
Actually it should be a lot like Morrowind now that you mention it.
Mordhak - August 3, 2005 01:49 PM (GMT)
Ohhh, a Morrowind player :D I just love the game. I also seriously recommend the Latest, Greatest Housing Mod, if you haven't got that one already. You don't need to do the main plot of the mod (which is hack 'n slash for the most part), but buying yurts and mansions all over Vvardenfell is so much fun! I especially liked the Infinity Warehouse in Pelagiad, where you had mannequins on which you could display suits of armour :P
Anyhow, back to business. As you may know, I'm Lhorkan's older brother and the leader of the military affairs overhere. I play Mount & Blade myself and even frequented the Taleworlds forums for a few weeks, but I'm not active anymore.
So, my question to you is: what was your major strategy plan like in Medieval or Rome: TW, if you had any? (I own both games aswell).
Guest - August 3, 2005 03:12 PM (GMT)
Haven't tried that housing mod yet, but I'll make sure to check it out. Got almost the limit of mods running (250 something?)
Very cool, didn't know Lhorkan had a brother. Stop by Taleworlds whenever ya feel like it! I'll try to keep Pavlov from banning ya.
As for strategies in the TW games... that's a pretty vauge topic. Depends on who you're playing as, really. I'm pretty flexible, the only strategy I don't like is phalanx oriented. Too cumbersome for my taste. In general, some good solid infantry to hold the line, cavalry and light inf on the sides to prevent flanking and try to get around behind the enemy. The romans have probably the most flexible army, but you can't go wrong with some screaming barbarian armies :barb: All-horse-armies are kinda boring, slightly overpowered, but fairly realistic I'd imagine.
I just got RTR 6.0, so I'll be cracking out on that for a bit when I get the chance.
Brennin Bark - August 3, 2005 03:13 PM (GMT)
Woops, that was me, forgot to log in

That might explain a couple things. :P
Brennin, if you have not done so, I suggest you read our
recruitment thread over at the Roma-Victor forums. It will give you some insight about the guild.
Slight barrage of questions ;) :
-Do you have any prior MMOG experience?
-What, if any, forums do you regularaly post in? Your username would also be appreciated.
-Do you have any prior online FPS experience? (Important in combat because it is first-person and real-time.)
-Since this guild is mostly democratic, can you abide by a ruling the majority of the guild has made, without growing flammatory?
Brennin Bark - August 3, 2005 08:11 PM (GMT)
From the first post in the thread:

:D
Summation, not much MMO experience, lots of FPS experience, I admin at the forums on www.taleworlds.com under Nairagorn, and I'm flame-retardant. I put out fires. I also play well with others and can/will follow the rules.
Hadn't seen the RV forums thread, thanks!
Bthizle1 - August 3, 2005 08:13 PM (GMT)
Morrowind has lots of mods? I had no idea, I still have it somewhere, do you think it would be worth installing again and puttin a mod on it? If so what mod...prefferibly a mod that changes ALOT so it's different this time around.
Brennin Bark - August 3, 2005 08:36 PM (GMT)
Wow, there are thousands of mods.
http://www.rpgplanet.com/morrowind/Click "mod database" in the column on the left. I have a feeling you're gonna soil your undies.
There's a few must-haves. Better Bodes, Better Heads, Lokken, Morrowind Comes Alive, Vampire Embrace, Assassins Armory just to start with. I use a couple texture sets, Darker Morrowind makes everything a bit gloomier, Red Skies turns the sky red and tweaks the light settings. I'll try to get some screens. Very cool.
http://www.elderscrolls.com/forums/index.php?showforum=12 is the official forums. Tons and tons of mods come out. It's hard to keep up with! I've played this game for the past two, three years, I've only completed the main quest once :P
::edit:: Small caveat, you really need the expansions for anything good. Tribunal at the very least. All three strongly reccomended. You can get Morrowind Game of the Year that has all three for like, 30 dollars US I think.
Bthizle1 - August 3, 2005 10:37 PM (GMT)
Are there any total conversion mods?
Traken - August 4, 2005 12:17 AM (GMT)
You lazy boy,
Google!. :P
I played Dragon's Breech about a year ago, and it was quite fabulous back then. It's nice to see that they are still working on it.
Bthizle1 - August 4, 2005 12:28 AM (GMT)
I think I'l just wait for Oblivion or whatever it is called to come out.
Methius Cursni - August 4, 2005 12:50 AM (GMT)
Well, good to see you have humor, just be careful how and when you use it.
Ok, what are some things that you dont like doing as a job ... such as textiles, handtools, mining, fishing, woodcutting .... skills in RV ... are there any that your "NO WAY!" too?
Also,
- Are you loyal? How far does it go?
- How friendly are you too people? How friendly will you be to Romans?
- Which describes you most: a) courageous B) hardworking c) studious d) loyal
- How well do you type? Do you type freqeuntly in leet?
- Why did you choose this guild over the others?
- If you had a choice, where would you start the game? Why?
- Do you count yourself as a good typer?
- Would you/do you contribute/think of ideas for this guild and BoN too further improve them?
- Would you be willing to Roleplay?
- To put in a favor for a certain somone, and to show them taht you will research .... can you find some gaelic words describing someone as being xenophobic,or not liking strangers? (A simple test, and less for me too do  )
- Any good at programming? Any good at website making?
Cathair - August 4, 2005 03:45 AM (GMT)
Oh, my, a person who is interested in Celtic history, has RTS expirience, FPS expirience, and can type like he speaks the language! :) I have to say your application excites me more than any other I've seen so far.
One question, which area of Celtic history fascinates you the most? Iberian, Northern Briton, Southern Briton, Manx, Irish, Gaulic?
Xenophon - August 4, 2005 04:13 AM (GMT)
Hello there Brennin, I have few questions once your done with all of meths (who seems to be trying to take my place as the million question man)
What is your goal in Roma Victor? What is it you want to gain or accomplish? (Besides to have fun)
From what you have seen, what do you think the Brathair should improve upon or change?
Is there any ideas our areas that you think would be beneficial for the clan to explore? (Besides a spell checker incorporated into the posts :P )
Do you have any particular skills that my aid the guild in some way? (ie Webmaster, expert in photoshop, experiance with flash, done front fage before, etc.)
Thats all the questions for today, Xeno.
Lhorkan - August 4, 2005 06:03 AM (GMT)
Hey Nair, you sure got my vote. ;)
Brennin Bark - August 4, 2005 07:10 AM (GMT)
Yowza, Ok, lets start at the top.
Methius Cursni:
| QUOTE |
| Ok, what are some things that you dont like doing as a job |
Couldn't say, haven't been in-game yet, so I'm unaware of the boredom factor of those jobs. Although I probably wouldn't say "no way" to any of them, assuming it's for a purpose, and not just busy-work time wasting.
| QUOTE |
| - Are you loyal? How far does it go? |
I'm very loyal. I see no point in screwing people over (IRL or in game) for gain. I'm a firm believer in karma. IRL there's nothing more important than A. family and B. friends. Not money, or power, or anything really. That's just they way I believe. I think that'll carry over into the game just fine.
| QUOTE |
| - How friendly are you too people? How friendly will you be to Romans? |
I'm a friendly, outgoing person, and incredibly patient. I will be as friendly to Romans as they are to me, I will give respect and friendship where it is due, and I will brook no insults. Do unto others, and all that.
| QUOTE |
| - Which describes you most: a) courageous hardworking c) studious d) loyal |
Hmm. Good question that. How do you define courage in a game? I will admit to being slightly lazy IRL (who isn't tho?). So I'd say a 50/50 mix of studious and loyal as being "me"
| QUOTE |
- How well do you type? Do you type freqeuntly in leet?
|
I think I type very well, I can tend towards grammar-nazi-ism, but I will usually keep it to myself. Leet speak makes my testicles retract into my body cavity in horror. I never use it unless to make a humorous point.
| QUOTE |
- Why did you choose this guild over the others?
|
Some reasons I outlined above. Maturity first and foremost. I've tended to stay away from online games simply because I can't stand the community (kiddies and leet speakers, etc). I pretty much stopped playing Day of Defeat online after the CS kids found it and I started noticing the age/maturity level dropping like a stone.
| QUOTE |
- If you had a choice, where would you start the game? Why?
|
Well, after browsing the RV forum I've decided I certainly want to play a barbarian. They may not have such an easy time of it, but the community seems less "crowded" I suppose you could say. So, anywhere really. Germania/ Gaul. Iberia might be kinda cool. I'll avoid Briton for now, that seems to be where people are flocking for some reason.
| QUOTE |
| - Do you count yourself as a good typer? |
Yes. Yes I do.
| QUOTE |
- Would you/do you contribute/think of ideas for this guild and BoN too further improve them?
|
I certainly would. I'm not shy, If I see a problem I call attention to it. Haven't seen anything odd yet, you guys seem to run a decently tight ship.
I love intelligent debate too, so don't be afraid to argue with me (in a civil manner of course, I don't do flame wars).
| QUOTE |
| - Would you be willing to Roleplay? |
Yeah. I haven't done much online RP, but IRL I've played a lot of RPGs... Shadowrun being a favorite from way back in the day.
| QUOTE |
| you find some gaelic words describing someone as being xenophobic,or not liking strangers? |
Hmm. Nąimhdeas- Scots gaelic for enmity, hostility, malice. Noidys -Irish feud, hostility, animosity. Tiamdha- Irish for gloomy, lonesome, afraid. Eadagh- Manx for jealous. Baoghal - south irish for shy/ afraid, Old Irish would be baigul or baegul. Faitagh - Irish for cowardly, fearful. Tnłth- Scots gaelic for envy, jealousy, bigotry. Jannoo lhiettrimys (er) - irish for "to hinder" or "to discriminate".
:ph43r: That ok? my reference:
http://www.ceantar.org/Dicts/| QUOTE |
| - Any good at programming? Any good at website making? |
Not much of a programmer, can do a little with VB. I've made a few web sites in my day, not very recently tho, nothing to show off.
Cathair:
| QUOTE |
| which area of Celtic history fascinates you the most? Iberian, Northern Briton, Southern Briton, Manx, Irish, Gaulic? |
Well, my family is one generation off the boat, so I'd say Irish. They all fascinate me tho, they're all related. I like history in general, seeing how cultural patterns change and migrate over time is something that really interests me.
Xenophon:
| QUOTE |
What is your goal in Roma Victor? What is it you want to gain or accomplish? (Besides to have fun)
|
Goal besides have fun... I hope to use the power I gain in game to incite revolution and eventually consolidate power in a bloody dictatorship.
Err. Nevermind. I suppose besides myself having fun I'd like to help other people have fun. I've been a noob (uh oh.. is that leet speak?) often enough and been harassed by more experienced players enough to know that's pretty one sided fun, like poking a caged puppy with a stick. So I tend to try to help out noobs when I can, show them that hey, there's more ways to have fun than getting the uber-est armor and weapons and beating up on new players.
| QUOTE |
what do you think the Brathair should improve upon or change?
|
Not sure at the moment, it looks from here like you guys are on the right track. You seem to have a fair number of members, so you must be doing something right. I'd really have to see how everything works in practice before I could start offering suggestions for improvement.
| QUOTE |
| Do you have any particular skills that my aid the guild in some way? |
Aside from my sparkling wit and intelligence? I've played around with html a little in my time. I'm a fair hand at Photoshop, mostly making sigs and little stuff, I'm no artist, unfortunately. My skills (that would help out you all) are mostly non-concrete. I'm a good researcher, planner, I'm a good mediator. I can hold intelligent conversation on a huge range of topics, and I'm not afraid to admit ignorance or wrongness. I can objectively look at all sides of an argument, (mostly) free of personal bias.
Wheew. That all of em? If you have more questions, bring em on!
Question of my own: How many people in the clan are in the beta? Assuming you let me in, will I be the only one without access to the game?
::edit:: Heyya Lhorkan! Thanks man, for the vote of confidence and for the heads-up on the clan!
NulliSecundus - August 4, 2005 07:35 AM (GMT)
Very impressive young man, very impressive. It would appear that all the questions I would've asked have already been answered but I still have a few that need to be answered. I'm sure my fellow guildsmen will call my questions silly, but you need to answer them, or else :P.
What would be your prefered genre of music?
Are you interested in psychology?
Are you interested in philosophy? and if so what would be your favorite philosopher/s?
What would be your favorite genere of literature (assuming you read)? What is your favorite book (assuming you read)?
Are you realistic or theoretical?
That's all the questions I have, for now.
Brennin Bark - August 4, 2005 08:13 AM (GMT)
Not silly questions at all, very good ones in fact.
I listen to a huge range of music. I mostly listen (on the radio) to the local college station. No top 40 stuff, I like local bands and less-commercial groups. Lemme see. In my car I have these cd's: Galactic "Late for the Future", Phish "Billy Breathes", A Flogging Molly/ Pouges mix, Beethoven piano sonatas by Horowitz, Bone "East 1999", Bloomfield, Cooper, Stills, and Nash "Super Sessions", a Kyuss mix, Aphex Twin "Come to Daddy", A Pearl Jam mix, Howlin Wolf "Howlin for my Baby", a BB King mix, 2 traditional Irish mixes, and Pantera "Vulgar Display of Power".
Eclectic enough for ya :D
I am very interested in psychology, the way peoples minds work... you can never know enough. Philosophy as well. Kant's interesting, his view of the human mind as an active originator of experience rather than just a passive recipient of perception is something I've mulled over many times. Do we create our own views of reality or are they forced upon us? Sartre is.... interesting too.
As I said up top, I'm a total book nerd. I just finished Musashi's "A Book of Five Rings" for the third time, and have started Clive Barkers "The Great and Secret Show". I've got tons of old sci-fi (Niven, Bradbury, Asimov, Heinlein, etc) fantasy, quite a few histories. You name it, there's a good chance I own it, or have at least read it. About 1/5 of my apartment is taken up by books.
I think of myself as both realistic and theoretical. I like the challenge of fitting the abstract into the realistic, compromising and evolving ideas. ie "Ok, that's a great idea, but how can we make it work".
Good questions, again. I enjoyed answering those.
NulliSecundus - August 4, 2005 08:44 AM (GMT)
Good to see you have such varying tastes, I'm like the old man stuck in his ways. I only really listen to techno/trance/dance & classical/opera. I have the same problem aswell, I must own enough book shelves to be classifed as a libary.
Now to move onto my favorite thing, psychology. I find that I'm boarderline obsessive over this topic and find myself sometimes even analyzing my own actions, it's good to see another so keenly interested in this science and I look forward to get into a deeper discussion with you on this most interesting topic.
Good to see you so keen on another one of my over obsessed topic's :D. I'm currently reading 'The Greeks' by Friedrich Nietzsche, postmodern philosphy is my current staple literature.
I'm satisfied with your answers and will vote in your favor.
Jolius - August 4, 2005 02:10 PM (GMT)
Three questions ordered ascending by importance.
Do you like roast beef sandwiches?
If you could grow any crop what would it be?
Where would you like to live in RV?
Brennin Bark - August 4, 2005 02:29 PM (GMT)
I love roast beef sandwiches. I'd grow either apples or barley (a toss up, both can be fermented), and I like mountains hills and trees, so I'd say central continental europe. Maybe a little north, to be near the ocean.
::edit:: Thanks for the vote NulliSecundus!
Kaso - August 4, 2005 03:47 PM (GMT)

Ha! I didn't even notice that!
:D
Mordhak - August 4, 2005 04:16 PM (GMT)
Yeah he calls me Young Vins or Young Jedi all the time. Maybe he just can't have it he's with the youngest of the clan. Poor buster.

This is my sort of man. No need to ask more questions he likes roast beef and alcohol :-p.
Cathair - August 4, 2005 07:43 PM (GMT)
Indeed, they are all very similar, but the differences are what makes studying them fun :) And the differences in the legends and some of the Deities are fairly different as well. I am Irish as well, but 3 generations off the boat... you have me beat. And that is also the area that fascinates me the most.
Brennin Bark - August 5, 2005 07:27 AM (GMT)
| QUOTE |
| but the differences are what makes studying them fun |
Absolutely. It's really interesting to look at the hero myths, and how they have changed from one cultural group to another.
The Ulster Cycle is one example, and some pretty interesting stories, history aside.
Bah, aint no contest. What's important is how you feel in your soul, not how long ago your ancestors left the motherland. Of course, try explaining that to folks who live in Ireland who feel that if you weren't born on the island you have no right to claim to be Irish
Anyway, Dyer family from Cork on my moms side, hopefully I'll get over there some day to pay them a visit.
NulliSecundus - August 5, 2005 10:32 AM (GMT)
That's what makes the irony so hilerious young Vins. But seriously, find me a 14 year old who even knows who Nietzsche is.
Brennin Bark - August 5, 2005 12:19 PM (GMT)
True, very rare, that is.
Yoda, talking like I am, why?
