Title: Cathair-application

Cathair - June 28, 2005 07:12 AM (GMT)
Age- 16- male

Hobbies/sports- Surfing, Soccer, History, strategy games, rpg games, social life

Previous/current RPG games played- DAoC (was very upset with the pansying they did to Celtic society :( )

Description of yourself- I am the stereotypical sothern californian on the outside but difer a lot from my shallow friends. I am active politically, have a passion for history and plan to go to school on a history major and more specifically, Irish Celts. I have tried studying Irish Gaelic, and hope to become fluent in it.

Tell us what you will bring to our Guild and why you would like to join Brąthair Prasgan- I am in a leadership position in most aspects of my life. I have a great understanding of the time period and am a very strategic person in general. I feel I will be able to help you guys most in battle. In short, I love conquering Rome with Briton, Gaul, and Germannia, never gets old ;) Although there is a new more historically accurate mod for it coming out soon that I can't wait to download...

Cathair - June 28, 2005 07:13 AM (GMT)
And that was, of course, referring to Rome: Total War ;)

NulliSecundus - June 28, 2005 07:30 AM (GMT)
My first question is why pick this guild over the other barbarian guilds?

Cathair - June 28, 2005 07:35 AM (GMT)
Honestly nobody has made an impression on me very much. And this is one of the only groups which has people active on the forums at Roma-Victor. Also, as you might have picked up on, I like to win very much. This guild seems like people who want to play well but also have maturity which is something I always look for. (I play RP servers most of the time not necessarily to RP but to get away from the 1337 d00dz).

And thank ye for the quick response.

Cathair - June 28, 2005 07:37 AM (GMT)
Also, I have been registered in the forums for about a month, but under the name of Ailpein a Pict which I won't be creating. Considering the fact that Picts as a people is historically inacurate considering that was a Roman term I decided not to be one after all and return to my Celtic roots. (I am 1/2 Irish).

NulliSecundus - June 28, 2005 07:39 AM (GMT)
Another question I have is what occupation will you take if you are accepted?

Cathair - June 28, 2005 07:42 AM (GMT)
I'll be the finest smith in the lands. For longswords that is.

NulliSecundus - June 28, 2005 07:51 AM (GMT)
If you could not be a smith are there any other occupations you'd like to be. Considering infostructure ect would need to be established before you could smith what occupation could you hold down before we create a smithy and locate material's to smith.

Cathair - June 28, 2005 07:54 AM (GMT)
Good point, I could be a wood gatherer/cutter. I plan to be larger and stronger (the name Cathair means Champion) so I imagine with encumberance added in I could be able to haul stuff around.

NulliSecundus - June 28, 2005 08:04 AM (GMT)
You say you lived in Australia, what state did you vist?

Cathair - June 28, 2005 08:08 AM (GMT)
I lived in Canberra, the year the Brumbies won the Super 12 :) I am the only person I know who seriously knows how to play and plays Rugby here in San Diego. (I was on the Rugby team, my older brother played on the AFL team, neither of us had any idea what we were doing at the time ;) ) We visited Sydney twice, in NSW to go surfing at Bondi. We also went to Uladulla and Bateman's Bay on vacation. Planning on returning next year for a visit. Canberra, Sydney, Perth, Hobart, back to Canberra.

NulliSecundus - June 28, 2005 08:12 AM (GMT)
You're missing out, you visted every state but the best one, Victoria.

My final question,

If you were stranded on a island with the choice of either having match's or a matress what would you choose?

Cathair - June 28, 2005 08:17 AM (GMT)
A mattress. I can make fire (hopefully) with my sunglasses which I always have on.

NulliSecundus - June 28, 2005 08:20 AM (GMT)

Lol good answer, you have my vote.

Cathair - June 28, 2005 08:23 AM (GMT)
Thank ye m'liege. Now off to bed. *bows*

maf359 - June 28, 2005 08:30 AM (GMT)
Since you didn't visit Victoria I don't think we should let you join lol, just kidding.

One question I do have is how many hours do you expect to play the week?

Methius Cursni - June 28, 2005 12:10 PM (GMT)
HEY! Alpein!, you may not knowe me but Im holymeth on forums ... (pefer to be called Meth)

I have seen you post much on the Eternal Debate, your arguements are much better then mine, and anyone can telll you are not only RPing. Its good that sucvh a good persona as you have choosen to join a guild such as this.

zelda12 - June 28, 2005 12:19 PM (GMT)
Indeed.

Anyway my question is this,

Your task was to lead a group of new recruits into battle. You don't know any of them yet, none of them can really fight, and they all look terrified. By the looks of it, they will rout as soon as the enemy advances. You have but one option to stand a chance: talk some sense into them.

In other words make a speech to inspire them.

(Sorry Mordhak but it’s a good question and appropriate.)

Lhorkan - June 28, 2005 02:01 PM (GMT)
Always nice to see some fresh blood looking to join the crew. :)

Mordhak - June 28, 2005 02:11 PM (GMT)
Indeed Zelda that was the question I posed to the candidates running for the position of general. I don't mind though, as long as you say it was my idea ;)

Anyhow, you seem quite capable, Cathair. Let me introduce myself as the leader of the military affairs within the Brotherhood.

And allow me to ask, what music do you listen to?

Methius Cursni - June 28, 2005 03:30 PM (GMT)
So, you plan to basicly concentrate on swords?

Do you plan to be militaristic? (fighting alot)

Do you plan to be a leader of somethnig in the guild?

Just to reinforce what Maf said: How much will you basicly play ... per week.

Do you work good with others?

You said you were political, do you think you could use it in game for this guild?

Why did you choose us instead of Tuatha?

Just curious .... The picts came from ireland, and the scottish came from the irish? (yet picts and scots are differnt)?

Cathair - June 28, 2005 06:53 PM (GMT)
Ok, I'll answer some of the questions :) Short on time right now, so the speech will have to wait, it's unfinished anyways. To specify what the speech contain may I ask if I am commanding men of my own tribe? Or a multitude of men, and whom is my enemy?

So, you plan to basicly concentrate on swords? Aye, two-handed swords at that. I may dabble in two-handed axes as well.

Do you plan to be militaristic? (fighting alot) Aye

Do you plan to be a leader of somethnig in the guild? Hopefully, but I won't be bitter if I am not one to start off or even if I don't get promoted. I will take that as a sign that I need to better myself more.

Just to reinforce what Maf said: How much will you basicly play ... per week. Maybe 14 hours a week, most being during the day (pacific US time) on weekends. Maybe a bit more because it is summer. But that is school hours.

Do you work good with others? Aye, I do. I know when I am a leader and I know when I am a subordinate. And I strive to make my peers, and myself, better.

You said you were political, do you think you could use it in game for this guild? Aye, I think I have a good hold on the old skill of rhetoric.

Why did you choose us instead of Tuatha? They seem like a good group of intelligent guys, but they make too many agreements with the Romans and seem to be weak in diplomacy. They are, however, extremely strong in RP and seem to be a very nice, good group of guys. They are too timid to make decisions.

Just curious .... The picts came from ireland, and the scottish came from the irish? (yet picts and scots are differnt)? The Picts are a mystery, but they surely did not come from Ireland. They are either the Megolithic peoples who got pushed up into Caledonia by the Celts (they had a matrilineal society as opposed to patrilineal which was very odd). They may have even been early early Norse settlers. Their beginnings are shrouded in mystery. And aye, the Scots came from Northeast Eire.

Cathair - June 28, 2005 06:54 PM (GMT)
Ack, double post ;)

Bthizle1 - June 28, 2005 08:02 PM (GMT)
WOW....I would have to say, this is prolly the best application I have seen yet. It's good to know you are a fellow historian, although you focus more on Celtic history. Do you follow general history though? If so what time periods interest you most?

Cathair - June 28, 2005 08:29 PM (GMT)
I like anything before the Industrial Revolution and after the beginnings of Civilization, such as Mesopotamia. But primarily, I love the Celts. Such as finding out that some Celts may have migrated east many years ago (long before the Roman Republic). They found blonde-haired men buried in Western China, but the Chinese quickly closed the dig site because of nationalistic issues. Things such as this are fascinating. And, as I have said, the beginnings of the Picts fascinate me as well. They had an inheritance unlike any other and they didn't really have a written language, whereas some of the Celts had Oghram (sp?) which may have been primitive but is better than nothing. Anyways, I am rambling and I promise I am working on that speech! ;)

Cathair - June 30, 2005 04:38 AM (GMT)
And Meth, I have noticed you as well. It is good to see you over here :) And to answer about my music, I listen to almost everything, but I love laid back music. Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Donovan Frankenreiter, Authority Zero. And also a little known band from Victoria, Australia named The John Butler Trio. They may not be from Victoria, but that's where they recorded their album. It only recently was releases state-side. And unless I get interrupted within the next few minutes I'll type up the speech.

Cathair - June 30, 2005 04:47 AM (GMT)
Fellow warriors, I am honored to lead you in battle today. Many of you may be frightened coming into this battle. I have heard in the ranks that victory is unreachable against the Roman Legions. Many of you wish to flee, and live another day. If you flee, it is given you will live... past today. But this battle is unique. This is not some tribal warfare as has been conducted in the past over petty squabbles. We are set apart that we do not fight for more land, not for slaves, not even for money. We fight so that we may honor OUR gods, and OUR customs. You fight for the knowledge that your sons and their sons and so on will not be under foreign rule from these Roman scum. You fight for your freedom. And if you can flee this battle, and look back on it when you are grey and not regret the one day when you could have changed history, then the Romans have already won the battle. But... if you want to make a difference, stand here now. For right now, you are free men. We lead ourselves and answer to no foreign power. So with that, give these Roman scum Celtic fury as they have never seen!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, that's it. I hope it's not too corny or cheesy for ye. I like writing so it may be a bit much and I may have rambled a bit too long. ;) I hope ye like it.

NulliSecundus - June 30, 2005 05:52 AM (GMT)
Well done, I feel a sudden urge to take my shirt off and paint myself blue.

Kaso - June 30, 2005 05:58 PM (GMT)
You like Braveheart, I assume.

Cathair - June 30, 2005 10:45 PM (GMT)
Braveheart, Ghettysburg (the Northern General in charge of the militia from Maine gave a great speech), and some books I have read. They were all factored in. Of course, I added some of my own ideas. But I would have to say I borrowed from Braveheart much less than other sources I have read from. I think it is just more similar because it is a similar type of warfare and reason for fighting.

NulliSecundus - June 30, 2005 11:53 PM (GMT)
Well it was a very good speech, somewhat clich'e but most inspirational speeches are.

Cathair - July 1, 2005 12:17 AM (GMT)
Did what I could :/ I have to admit the question caught me off guard.

Mordhak - July 1, 2005 08:41 AM (GMT)
One last question, Cathair, and then I'll decide on your faith:

Tell me, which is wrong and which is right.

You find a crying baby lieing alone in the streets. You ...

1) ...shove it aside with your feet. You could care less.

2) ...pick it up and deliver it to the hospital.

Cathair - July 1, 2005 06:06 PM (GMT)
If it is a Roman, I push it aside, they are worthless. If it is a fellow Celt I pick it up.

(RPing of course)

Kaso - July 1, 2005 06:11 PM (GMT)
You've just lost many points with me, Cathair.

Cathair - July 1, 2005 06:48 PM (GMT)
With some of the Latin names in here, I figured I might. But because Celtic society places honor above all, I knew I must answer how my heart truly felt and not sugar-coat it.

Kaso - July 1, 2005 06:55 PM (GMT)
How ignorant. You talk about how honorable you're trying to be by kicking a baby just because it looks different. Your reasoning that I dislike your answer because I support the Romans, "With some of the Latin names in here, I figured I might.", is foolish as well. My view of honor doesn't involve racism and child abuse. Personally, I would pick the child up and take him with me.

Mordhak - July 1, 2005 07:06 PM (GMT)
Sorry guys... that's not what I wanted to hear. I didn't ask, what would you do. I asked, "Which is right and which is wrong".

The correct answer is... there is no right or wrong.

Kaso - July 1, 2005 07:07 PM (GMT)
There's no right or wrong as to whether or not you should abandon a baby in the street?

Cathair - July 1, 2005 07:19 PM (GMT)
Kaso, of course if it was me, Sean, as a person I would pick it up. I am attempting to RP. And racism and ethnocentrism was rampant back then. Why do you think there were so many wars? I think I know how to play a Celt considering I have spent a good deal of time researching how they think. I am not saying this is the only way to play one, but that is more what you are saying. I feel as if you are dragging this out of character.
