Title: Gore/Snowe Independent Ticket

Chuck Holzhauer - December 17, 2007 11:31 AM (GMT)

Al Gore & Olympia Snowe should gracefully but firmly cut their ties to their political parties, and make a run for the presidency/vice presidency on an independent ticket.

It could happen: Gore has the trust and support of millions of center-left voters; Snowe could draw the support of millions of center right voters. The issues are not poltical philosophy: voters want honesty, openness, and plainness of speech. In all of these areas Gore and Snowe have proven themselves.

They could stitch together a straightforward platform involving energy awarness, public transportation, national health care, and a firm winding down of the disastrous adventures in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It could happen.

Olympia Snowe is a Republican-By-Marriage, twice over. Divorcing her party would mean divorcing her current husband, former Maine Governor Jock McKernan. Furthermore, it would also mean distancing herself from the legacy of her first husband, Peter Snowe, whose seat in the Maine House of Representatives she took over after his death in a car accident. Olympia Snowe does not represent the values of the current-day Republican party; she is a holdover from the old Rockefeller brand . . . but it's a brand name she's going to stick to. Mark my words.

I would, however, love to see the Democratic president, whomever it is (and, yes, I wish it were Gore, but it really does appear that he is not running) name Snowe to the Cabinet. That would open up the Senate seat in Maine, allowing Democratic Gov. John Baldacci to name a (Democratic) replacement.
