Will Al Gore Ever Be President?

Q. I just can't wrap my mind around the continuing refusal of Al Gore to run. Why won't he? Is he gun-shy? Having too much fun? Playing hard to get? Or is it the Clintons?
-- Erin Keniston

A. Close your eyes and ponder one of the universe's deepest mysteries: What must it have been like to be Al Gore for this past decade? Now that the man has won his Nobel, he should allow someone else to win one for studying his psyche, focusing on the question you raise: his refusal to run for president in 2008, when the stars would all seem to be aligned in his favor.

I don't presume to know why Gore isn't running, or whether he seriously considered it. But I do know that few people could have a better appreciation for the cruel fickleness of the electorate.

Voters pine for potential candidates who haven't deigned to enter the race yet. We take for granted, if not mock outright, those who beg us for our votes and set out to woo those still on the sidelines. Mario Cuomo got addicted to this wooing, never wanting to give it up. Fred Thompson succumbed to such wooing, and is now discovering how suddenly and cruelly voters reassess a candidate once the chase is over -- once it's the candidate doing the begging. We are a fickle bunch.

It is hard to blame the guy for not wanting to go through the incredible shrinking machine that is a primary campaign, and once again become that Gore. Bear in mind that he's a politician who has experienced the benefits of restraint, of staying on the sidelines. After losing to Michael Dukakis in 1988, Gore stayed out of the 1992 primary and ended up vice president. Would he have been Bill Clinton's running mate had he been through a losing primary season spent attacking his fellow southerner?

If I were Gore -- okay, I am trying hard to imagine what it must be like -- I probably felt a little awkward visiting the White House this week for the first time in seven years. I'd probably also feel entitled to be handed something, ideally the keys to the White House. I won the 2000 popular vote and was robbed by a conniving court and villainous Bush operatives. But now I have emerged with all this moral authority. And you want me to do what? To stand between Chris Dodd and Dennis Kucinich in 29 debates if I want the party's nomination? Are you freakin' kiddin' me?!

All of which leaves Gore on the sidelines, facing the prospect of a Hillary Clinton presidency, and I am guessing Gore would reassure you that yes, it's a distinct possibility... and that he would utter such reassurance through clenched teeth.

You gotta be in it to win it

You either run
You either become VP and do an LBJ
Or you secretly wish all today's candidates lose and then there is 2012 but that is very cynical and mankind loses and one can never be sure a negative will turn into a positive anyhow, too many variables.

or you don't

When you get right down to it, there are no other possiblities
you have
Yes
No
Maybe

sing obladi-oblada-life goes on la la la la la obla di blada

Personally I think he was cooerced into not running by nefarious means.
He did NOT just sit in 1992...there was a reason he didn't run, and it was his sons mysterious hit and run accident leaving his son near death that took him out of the race.

I still think the VP is a possiblity, and then who knows?
It will be the only way after this he could become President.

Better to compromise than have ideals I guess
Those that didn't compromise in the 60s are no longer here to talk about things today
Guess that is why Bobby Jr. sold out to Hillary too.
(or as Neil Young might say...

I kind of think they all enjoy it. Sometimes it's funny since it seems REAG is pretty thick-skinned when insulted. ;)

I'll not engage too much in that sort of thing. I get more than my fill from work, family, friends, strangers.....etc. As they say, you have to choose your battles. I choose not to seek out arguments. Too many of them find me as it is.

Good points. All the name calling and insulting of certain members by other members is becoming annoying and is very childish and proves nothing.

I get enough of this aggravation from Bush supporters. ;)

Yes, Gore will be president. Have you noticed that the polls are so close that no one will come out a clear winner, and in steps Gore?

I agree, TNBlue. It can be funny sometimes and I do think they like it because there wouldn't be so much of it going on. Yes, REAG must be pretty thick-skinned.

I would say let's all focus on getting Al to run but I can't hardly say that since they asked us to stop the petitions. But Patsy, you're right, the race is getting very tight which could be the perfect opening for Al. I'll still cling to hope for as long as I can.

You mean by a singular member, and I have asked the admins here to stop it.

BTW, the member has slammed Gore enough and other DEMs that maybe you think he is a repug operative sent here to cause dissension?

Maybe with the constant calls to go third party in every single thread?

Maybe to splinter the progressive vote?

Maybe by the constant calling of those who oppose those views as being anti-America?

Maybe being like a Bush supporter?

Maybe we need the moderators here to address it because I have complained many, many time without response from them or you?

AlGoreFan - December 3, 2007 04:17 AM (GMT)
I guess the CHILL PILL was ineffective or this site is not what I thought, a place to support Al Gore.

ReElectAlGore2008 - December 3, 2007 09:23 AM (GMT)
Wanting Gore to run 3rd party, as opposed to supporting Hillary is NOT splintering the progressive vote.

As Hillary is NOT a progressive, NOT a liberal, NOR has Hillary ever been a progressive or a liberal.
Progressives do NOT want Hillary as she is PRO-WAR Machine and always will be.
She is pro-going into a new place to replace the old place.

As Gore does not appear to be running as a democrat (this already being Dec.3 and he is not in the race, nor has made any appearances saying he will be), then if you don't want President Clinton, Gore would have to run 3rd party

I support a 3rd party Al Gore run. To win. Not to spoil. And if he doesn't, I support someone else who will challenge Hillary as a Progressive. If for some reason Hillary does NOT become the nominee, then I may or may not support that person, depending who that person is, and who they take for their VP.(Taking a Hillary or a demlite would be a no-no).

This is NOT the Hillary fan board...she does not have a Hillary support board or an official Hillary chat board. Why? Because she controls the content and message.

Unlike Al Gore who made his own TV station so the public can speak out on whatever they want

See the difference?

Al Gore for President. I don't give a spit what party name is next to him.
As long as it doesn't say Loyal to Hillary next to it.

You're right about the polls - and a full 50 % are undecided at this point! I knew the pace of this race couldn't hold every one's attention long enough - fatigue has already set in and no one really know who to pick because they don't really like any of them...

Alas, the country waits for Gore...

The Paraclete - December 3, 2007 04:03 PM (GMT)
Oh let them go at it...it's releasing of frustrations! And very theraputic! A catharsis is sometimes necessary...facing facts, we have lived under going on 8 years of a "cheat" and a monumental "liar"...a neocon warmonger that allowed gasoline to raise by $1.50 a gallon (I won't even mention diesel)...Carter let it go up by $.50 a gallon years ago along with being the recipient of a 'hostage crisis' and THEY all but HUNG him...BU$H does the same thing by starting an pointless WAR and THEY want to hand the SOB a medal for it!

I don't see him being impeached, but he should be prosecuted after the fact with the whole lot of them...and should be stripped of any presidential benefits if convicted...

I have seen many presidents since 1963 when I was a wee child...and BU$H has been by far THE WORST! :dripple:

So if folks want to peck at each other then let 'em...that's what 7 years of 'evil' rule produces!...IT WILL BE ENDING VERY SOON! ;)

IanOC - December 3, 2007 06:41 PM (GMT)
Al Gore will NOT be president in 2008. He is too loyal of a Democrat to run third-party, and today and tomorrow are the last days for him to get in to qualify for California, New York and Maryland. He is not running. So, the best Gore fans can hope for is that he will be asked and agree to serve as VP, or that he will run again in 2012 or 2016.

I'm hoping Obama gets Gore's endorsement and wins in Iowa (where he is now leading) and then pulls surprise victories in New Hampshire and South Carolina. He then announces Gore will serve as his VP and the Clintons go back to Arkansas where they belong.

That's not entirely true, both Wayne and myself have politely asked the members involved to stop. It's obvious, you have not read the posts in several threads asking this of all members who are name calling and insulting each other.

And AlGoreFan, just because you disagree with another member's views, name calling isn't the answer and you know what I mean.

I admit it.

I have called a member here names.

I am a bad person.

I am wrong.

I am discredited.

I am a fraud.

Like that member said, I am not a Gore fan.

That member has not called me names, it can't be calling names if it is the truth.

Believe everything that member has said about me and about Gore.

I will now forget the url to this Support Center.

Why for the good of this common cause can't we all just get along? I hate to see Al Gore Fan leave or be picked on for his/her opinions but name calling, personal attacks and insults by and against any of AL Gore's supporters is just sad.

I'm still holding on to faith that Al Gore will be president one day and the sooner the better off we'll all be!

Let's not give up and let's not beat each other up along the way!

Many, many thanks from a fellow diehard supporter of our duly elected president, Albert Arnold Gore :)

Hey AlGore fan, I don't think you're a bad person and I don't think anyone wants to see you leave. We'd be short on entertainment if you did.

Seriously, I think we've all made our share of mistakes. You guys are "big boys" and know how to take care of yourselves, and the jokes are comical but it's hard to know whether you guys are joking or not. There's enough room on this board for you two, despite ya'lls differences.

With so many people here, it's understandable that we're not going to agree on everything. But as long as we're all Al Gore fans, can't we just agree to disagree on the issues and bury the hatchet? :)

Wayne in WA State - December 4, 2007 04:48 PM (GMT)
Al Gore Fan, you are one of my favorite forum members.

You might try when a topic comes up that you thinks is nutty, like Gore running on a 3rd Party ticket ( I think it's nutty too ) just ignore it. We don't have to respond to every post in error. Write about what you want, don't just respond to someone else.

hope this helps :Y:

Texan for Gore - December 4, 2007 05:56 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I've been known to come up with a nutty idea or two. :P

Just consider it my last ditch, desperate attempt to cling to a sliver of hope of a Gore run. :D
