I'd like to lay to rest the idea that these spam links come from neo-cons trying to infiltrate our ranks. These are automated spambots. All websites are fair game and it has nothing to do with the content of the website. We get hit with porn links but also cheap pharmaceuticals and all kinds of other things.

You know the spam that shows up in your Inbox? The latest one I've been getting is how to make my _______ bigger. Pretty funny, since I don't have one. But all these are just random spamming events, not a conspiracy, and we do the best we can to keep up with them on the board. When we get one, I ban both the IP address and the user name, but that doesn't stop them from coming back using a different computer. They're easy to spot because they usually have a smiley face in the heading, which is part of their M.O.

Anyway, just please let us know when you encounter these things and we'll take care of it.

I get them, too, mostly viagra or cialis. I just laugh and delete them. :lol:

As far as that junk turning up here, I know if I see one, I delete it immediately and so does E.M. and Wayne.

I get about a million a week and like EM, I don't have one either.
I opened one of them once to unsubscribe and got an instant virus, which was just as instantly taken care of by my AV protection.

EM, I have been working with computers and random access programming since 1981, and I know what a spambot is...It is true that many are mindless robots just passing through E-mail addresses and URL's but to say they are totally automated can be derided as a false concept...I am not saying that most aren't because they are...but most are created by human hands...but most don't defy logic...We use address munging on this site and on many sites they use CAPTCHAS to prevent spambots from dropping loads of crap.. <_<

But here's the rub...among the millions of URL's that begin with an A, a spambot would take a long time to drop loads here...but a spambot CAN be fine tuned with a 'list' to search for ONLY specific sites...and all it takes is somebody going to a porno site and dropping the URL of THIS site to receive mailers...THAT makes the job of a spambot easier because it doesn't HAVE to search through millions and perhaps billions of URL's...Contrary to popular belief, many porno sites don't randomly spam sites unless asked because technically it's illegal...but if somebody who doesn't like your site goes to a porno site, they can effectively drop your URL there claiming you WANT that spam...it's NOT the same as E-mail addresses that are randomly sifted through to find potential customers...The porno sites are indeed manned by humans, and most WON'T drop spam on a political site because common sense tells the porno operator not to drop there...but if ANOTHER human being goes in and drops the URL to THIS site there then the porno site operator will say "well it's OK to drop spam here because we were given permission to do so"... :read:

EM, I am not saying this couldn't be random, but I AM saying it isn't LIKELY it's random...If I hate a conservative board, I can rush to various porno sites and drop the URL of THAT site there thus setting up THAT conservative site as a potential "target"...Then that site, say the Free Republic would be hit by spambots dumping ALL kinds of crap there...What I AM saying is if I WANTED to be nasty then I COULD set up a scenario that would cause spambots to do my dirty work FOR me! :!:

I don't want to sound paranoid, but it didn't surprise me that as soon as we started focusing on Glenn Beck then ALL of a sudden a spambot showed up! I can also 'masquerade' AS a spambot if I wished to cover my own tracks as well! I can use an anonymous proxy server for my IP address and through a little programming 'magic' I can MAKE myself LOOK like a spambot too! And you would NEVER know the difference! Remember the slogan "is it REAL or is it Memorex?" With spambots its more like "is it Memorex or is it REAL?" :?:

papa, I have also worked with computers since 1979, and I also am not paranoid. What you are saying is basically true. Now drug companies dropping say Cialis or Viagra spam may hit here randomly, but porno site operators don't usually go where they are not welcome unless invited due to the content of their sites.

The reason is because the porno site operator, contrary to popular beliefs, won't drop on a site where minors may see the materials. They are very sensitive to dropping content where those under 18 may see the content.

When somebody drops a URL at a porno site, the operator there asks this question. "are you 18 or over"? Of course the porno operator knows the guest may be telling a lie anyway, but it relinquishes responsibility from the porno site if that guest claims to be over 18.

That way if it comes back on them for liability for an illegal act they can say, "we were given permission to use this URL and we have record of it on file". I will bet you if you go back to the source of that spam, some human being gave permission to drop porno spam at this site.

No regular member of this site would drop the URL at a porno site, so it is safe to assume it was dropped by somebody who dislikes this site. Since many neocons and freepers do not like this site, then it's safe to assume one of them dropped the URL. Here's what to do, the next time a spambot shows up, go back to the original porno site and ask if somebody gave permission to use this URL. The porno operator will have a record of it. But here's the bad part. That somebody may have also used a proxy server to do the dirty work and somebody else's E-mail address or a bogus one. So your trail dies there, but at least you can find out if another human entity did do it.

Also watch conservative boards, because some of these hackers love to brag about it. That's my advice.

Papabear, the spambots hit us on a daily basis, whether we're talking about Glenn Beck or not. It's not related to our content on any given day. It's just that, with the exception of myself, all our active moderators are on the West Coast, which means that if I don't check in here early in the morning, no one has had a chance to delete the offending posts by the time most of our members are on the board. AGIML and Wayne are master mods. and very quick to delete these posts and notify me so I can delete and ban the user name and IP address. But sometimes we don't get to them before a lot of people have already seen them.
