WASHINGTON - Draftgore.com, which describes itself as a group of grass-roots Democrats, underwrote a full-page open letter to Al Gore in Wednesday's New York Times, imploring the former vice president to enter the presidential campaign.

The ad, which says 136,000 people have signed Draftgore's online petition, was published two days before this year's Nobel Peace Prize is expected to be announced. Gore has been nominated for the prize because of his campaign to bring attention to global warming.

"America and the Earth need a hero right now — someone who will transcend politics as usual and bring real hope to our country and to the world," Draftgore's letter said.

Monica Friedlander, founder and chair of Draftgore.com, said the timing of the $65,000 ad was a coincidence and not related to the prize.

"All we're trying to do is persuade him that it's a moral imperative for him to be a candidate," said Friedlander, 47, a public relations specialist in Oakland, Calif. She said the group raised the money for the ad with an e-mail solicitation sent out last week, receiving more than 2,000 donations.

Although Gore has said he has no intention of becoming a presidential candidate, several groups around the country are trying to persuade him to enter the race.

"He deeply appreciates the heartfelt sentiment behind this ad and understands where this comes from, but he has no intention of running for president," said Gore spokeswoman Kalee Kreider.

As the Democratic nominee in 2000, Gore won the general election popular vote but lost the electoral vote to George W. Bush after a legal challenge to the Florida result that was decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Since then, the former Tennessee senator has worked against global warming and served on corporate boards, including Google and Apple Inc.

"He deeply appreciates the heartfelt sentiment behind this ad and understands where this comes from, but he has no intention of running for president," said Gore spokeswoman Kalee Kreider.

Seems that Gore (according to Kalee) misses the point.

Well Al, we deeply appreciate the heartfelt sentiment behind your climate change efforts and understand where it comes from, but we have no intention of doing anything about it.

marla - October 10, 2007 05:04 PM (GMT)
who is Kalee? and does she work in Al's office? This is driving me nuts. One thing you read makes you think he will run then response to full page ad is no intention of running!

IanOC - October 10, 2007 05:22 PM (GMT)
Yes, that sounds like a "no" to me. Still hoping that the DraftGore folks can convince him, but it's not looking good.

marla - October 10, 2007 05:41 PM (GMT)
Just looked up who she is and she is the main Gore PR person who handles all his statements and if he was thinking of running soon he wouldn't have her say that would he? Now I feel upset, one article I read said that they were trying hard to make global warming cool, like the in thing and I guess they have done a great job of that, but I just can't believe Al would let us all do this draft thing just to bring free advertising for his global warming causes.

If he did he will be left in the dust by a lot of us that trusted and look up to him for integrity. People don't like being used. Even for a good cause.

If Al is planning on running soon why have her make that statement?? even if its the same one he has made before, but saying it now is like we really mean it....I am sad.

Texan for Gore - October 10, 2007 06:23 PM (GMT)
Marla, you've voiced my feelings exactly. I'm feeling hurt and disappointed. And it is hard not to feel used. Granted, Al doesn't owe us anything, but if he truly had no intention of running, why couldn't he have just made the Sherman statement early on. In 2004, I knew not to get my hopes up because he made the statement early on. I know he doesn't owe the media a Sherman statement, but there have been sooo many draft people who have worked sooo hard. How could he not say anything to us if he truly had no intentions of running???

I'm sorry. I'm just bummed out right now. :(

tkdveg - October 10, 2007 06:30 PM (GMT)
Guys, be patient!! Nothing, I repeat, NOTHING has changed! They aren't saying anything different!

Wait till after Friday when the Nobel is announced before you start getting bummed! They can't and won't say anything different till then, at the earliest!

tkdveg - October 10, 2007 06:40 PM (GMT)
NPR just mentioned the movement to Draft Al Gore - it was a teaser comment, so I'll let you guys know what they say... as soon as they say it.

tkdveg - October 10, 2007 07:01 PM (GMT)
Sorry, nothing we didn't already know. The full-page ad in the NY Times was mentioned, and the Newsweek article, but the non-Gorista being interviewed said he didn't think he'd run. Then he made some stupid comment about Al winning the Nobel and losing the weight, then he'd have the 'no belly' prize. What a dork!

Once the Nobel Peace Prize is announced in 48 hours then Al has the world stage to himself. Let's trust him! Al has brought the issue of Global Warming to the world's attention. Once Al receives the Nobel Peace Prize then his status in this country will rise and then that's when all American's will be proud of him.

Al does not want this to be a political issue. He has said many times that solving the Global Warming crisis is a moral issue. Everyone else including those of us that support him is making it a political issue.

Al will not let us down now. He cannot do this alone. Al is setting the stage to become a candidate at some point. Al needs more then just our support to solve the Global Warming crisis.

We are watching a Statesman at work in Al Gore! What better way to campaign for President then being non-political?

Everyone who has worked in the Draft Gore and Al Gore Support Center should be proud of all there hard work. There loyalty to him will pay off. A man like Al Gore comes along once in a lifetime. I think we all recognize this and thats why we are so passionate about having him as our President.

In 48 hours Al Gore will be the most powerful person in this country. The moment we have been waiting for has arrived. It will happen.

gore for president :good:

Texan for Gore - October 10, 2007 08:41 PM (GMT)
tk and gfp, thank you both for your encouraging words. I really do believe in Al Gore and there is NO ONE else I want for President. I just don't see anyone else out there who is qualified enough, or honest enough, or who cares about our Country enough to be President.

I've tried to remain positive throughout this....uh...ordeal, but the last few days have been getting to me. I've really felt in my heart that Al wouldn't let us down, but this last comment wasn't very soothing.

But hey, it's not long now. I'm not going to throw in the towel yet.

Nothing has changed and Al Gore is holding his cards right next to his vest. We wish we could peek and see what he's holding but we can't. If he's going to do this, I expect he'll be saying he has "no plans" to run until a day or so before he announces; maybe until the day before. He just isn't going to tip his hand, for whatever reason.

Has Al Gore said directly that he isn't going to be a candidate in 2008 and asked us to shut down the Draft Gore movement and websites like these? No.

All we can do is hang in there. Even if we're behind in the 9th inning, let's play hard until the very end. Wouldn't you rather we give it our best try and lose than simply give up?

I'm really trying to be optimistic. I liked it better when he wasn't saying anything.

marla - October 10, 2007 09:40 PM (GMT)
That how I felt, better when he was saying nothing...(of course then I could put in what I wanted it to be!)

I also on way to gym heard the guy on NPR and he made us draft gore people sound like a fringe cult group of nothings...that didn't help my thinking any as I wanted to hear good news.

I guess the best is on another post here they are showing since the ad today how many people are signing the petition today and it has moved up thousands just since this mornings paper so it is making a difference.

Of course they don't report that!!

Thanks for encouraging me, I have become to obsessed on the whole thing and need to spend more time OFF the computer till after friday.

Here is what Ms. Kreider stated in February in an Associated Press article about supporters pushing Mr. Gore to run: "He so appreciates the sentiment behind efforts like this. But he's been very clear he really has no intention of running for president in 2008." It appears that the comment today is just the camp's generic response to the question. If he was not going to at least consider a run he would have come up with something stronger and clearer since February. Particularly in light of all the rumor, speculation, effort by draft gore groups, etc, that has continued since early February. If Mr. Gore wanted to stop the rumor and speculation and make clear he was not going to run I am sure he could find the words and would not chose the same words that quite obviously did not end any speculation when they were uttered in February. I think (hope) that the fact that all that is coming from his camp in October is the same generic and oft used open-to-speculation comment means he is still considering the possibility of running.

Thanks for the encouraging words. I get discouraged when I hear statements like the one from the Gore spokesperson. I really don't think we will know until after the Nobel, sometime next week or the week after it, whether Gore's thinking has shifted. And I'm really blown away by how the DraftGore folks have stepped things up this week.

Gore just has to run. The whole damn world wants him too. If Clinton wins, we risk a backlash from Middle America which puts another Republican in the White House. Which means four more years of environmental destruction, warmongering, attacks on civil liberties, rolling back of welfare programs, and God knows what else.

Run, Al, Run!!!

whybaby - October 11, 2007 11:39 PM (GMT)
Hope and anxiety don't mix well. I'm not nervous about the Nobel, I'm nervous about the next few weeks. Is there a pill for this?

But I'm banking on hope. I can always despair later, if my hope is no longer needed.

Great first post, 1more4Gore, and thank you for your encouraging reminder and logical thinking.

Everyone, repeat after me:
There has been no Sherman statement.
There has been no Sherman statement.
There has been no Sherman statement.
There has been no Sherman statement.
There has been no Sherman statement.

There! Now don't we all feel better?

And Wayne - Hearing from Dame Edna was just the perfect touch.
"Chins Up Possums, It still just might happen!"

I and my chins thank you too!
