It was October, the year before the Presidential election.
The front running Democratic candidate, a Northeast Democratic U.S.
Senator, had endorsements from many important Democratic office
holders.
It seemed a new Democratic elected official jumped aboard the
bandwagon almost daily.
Hillary Clinton, right?
After all, she just got George McGovern's endorsement today.
No, we're not talking about October 2007.
I'm reflecting on October 1971.
And the Democratic front runner was U.S. Senator Edmund S. Muskie.
I was there, and remember all the "inevitability" of Muskie very well.
His candidacy began to fall apart as soon as the NH primary votes
began to be counted, OUT of the race all together very soon
afterwards.
Before we "cornonate" HRC for the nomination, just remember what
happened to Muskie 35 years ago.
The same COULD happen to HRC next January.
Be careful who we endorse.
The weight of all those endorsements might bring down HRC just like
it did to Muskie.
Iowa and NH may give our party a SURPRISE next January...because THEY
KNOW THAT THEY CAN.
Stay tuned.
