Funeral service today for Nell LaFon

A graveside service for Nell LaFon will be held at 1 p.m. today at Hollywood Cemetery in Jackson.

LaFon served as an executive secretary to Silliman Evans, publisher of The Tennessean in Nashville. She also taught at Union University for 18 years.

She was the wife of retired Judge Whit LaFon.

She also was the aunt of former Vice President Al Gore Jr. A funeral home spokesman said Gore is expected to attend the graveside service.

Services Monday for Gore aunt Nell LaFon

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday for Nell Adams LaFon, aunt of former Vice President Al Gore.

Dr. Craig Christina and Dr. Bob Elliott will officiate over the service at Hollywood Cemetery in Jackson, which Gore is expected to attend, according to George A. Smith & Sons Funeral Home.

LaFon, wife of retired Judge Whit LaFon, passed away Thursday at her residence at age 90. Whit LaFon is the brother of Gore's late mother, Pauline Gore.

LaFon was born in Ridgley, according to an obituary provided by the funeral home. She received a bachelor's degree from Memphis State University and a master's degree from Peabody College with a double major in Latin and business.

She taught for three years at Ridgely High School, three years at Maryville High School and one year at Hume-Fogg High School in Nashville.

She later served as an executive secretary to Silliman Evans, publisher of the (Nashville) Tennessean for 15 years. She moved to Jackson in 1960 and taught at Union University for 18 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jackson.

Besides her husband, other survivors include one sister, Dee Porter of Trenton; 16 nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and -nephews.

The family has asked that memorial gifts be directed to First Baptist Church in Jackson or to Union University.

Memorials may be directed to First Baptist Church of Jackson or to Union University.

Family visitation will precede the graveside servce, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday at the North Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons, 2812 N. Highland Ave., in Jackson.
