Description: Al Gore on 30 rock being a bad sign

at least as per the democratic candidate

(could be a good sign for 3rd party though as that decision can wait til summer08)

I commented elsewhere on this board that I don't think there's any negative significance to Gore doing the cameo bit on 30 Rock. If it were a major role, such as he did on SNL back in 2002, that would be something else. But this is part of NBC's "Green Is Universal" week of environmental programming, and who better than Gore to have on a show?

I don't think we can read anything into this at all, and certainly nothing negative.

I feel that it has been really hard on VP Gore to stay quiet about issues. He is not going to bring politics into the mix until ater the Nobel Peace Prize is announced. I feel strongly that he is not going to let Hillary have the job that is rightfully his. He knows that the Clintons and Bushes both were working aginst him in 2000. The Clintons were looking 8 years down the road. When Tom Delay brought all of his supporters to Florida to contest the counting of the votes, the Clintons could have brought their followers to help Gore. It would have been more of a level playing field. VP Gore has said that the candidates are not bringing enought attention to Global Warming, and that means that he will have to step up to the plate and do it himself. I'm not worried about the 30 Rock, if it is a conflict, the cameo appearance can be pulled.

The may simply be someone in the 30R/SNL crew's doing. Or maybe Alec Baldwin?

My first post here. Are you guys sure that the 30 Rock episode with Gore will air on November 8?

CNN says that it will air on 11/8, but according to another source (the Gawker link is somewhere in this forum), Gore's episode would be the fifth episode aired, which would be November 1. :?:

This is critical because the NH deadline was moved to November 2 (Hillary probably twisted some arms and had it moved). Gore needs to be on the NH ballot!

If someone can confirm the actual date of the 30 Rock episode, it will answer a lot of questions.

There is probably one week in end of Oct. it won't be on, making the following week the 5th...(November is sweeps, October isn't).

November 1 would be during the sweeps period (30 Rocks is on Thursdays).

If Gore wins the Nobel Prize, would 30 Rock be tempted to move the Gore episode up to maximize the buzz?

My hope is that Gore wins the Nobel and 30 Rock airs the episode the following week, which would be 10/18. His Chicago speech is 10/17. And it would buy him extra time to get on the early primary ballots.

If someone who works in the business could notify 30Rock that we need that episode to be aired on the 18th, I'm sure they will defer to the wishes of the Al Gore Support Center. :D

Hopefully this will put to rest any and all speculation that his appearance on 30 Rock has any bearing on him running:

Equal time" or "equal opportunities" require that broadcast stations give treat candidates for the same political race in an even-handed fashion. If they sell time to one candidate, they have to give the other candidate equal opportunities to buy the same amount of time in programs reaching roughly the same size audience. If time is provided to a candidate without charge, and the candidate's on-air appearance is outside of a news or news interview programs and is not part of on-the-spot coverage of a news event, then the broadcaster must make equal time available to the opposing candidate, if that candidate requests it within 7 days of the use by the first candidate.

However, none of these obligations arise until a candidate is legally qualified - essentially when he or she has filed the necessary papers to obtain a place on the ballot in accordance with the governing law of the jurisdiction in which the election will be held. In Thompson's case, as he has not even officially announced that he is running, he is not yet a legally qualified candidate, so for the time being, there is no issue with the continued airing of the programs in which he appears.

In Presidential races, once a candidate becomes legally qualified in 10 states, he or she is legally qualified in every state. In the primary, that presents some issues - as many of the "primary" states don't have primaries but instead have caucuses. For FCC political rules purposes, lowest unit charges do apply to a caucus - but the FCC has not defined when a candidate for president becomes legally qualified in a caucus state which does not have any required registration process. For non-Presidential races, there is a presumption that one is not legally qualified more than 90 days before a primary - but that specific ruling does not apply in the Presidential race. So when a Presidential candidate is legally qualified in 10 states may be difficult to determine. it may be, with so many state moving their primaries to early February (see our comment on this move), the issue may be settled quickly as candidates become qualified in primary states with formal filing deadlines.

In other words, from what I gather, you're not binded to the equal time laws until you're on the ballot of ten states. There are not ten filing deadlines before the episode is set to air.

parsing of words is something Bill Clinton does
We expect better.

NO...we demand better.

With parsing will come weeks of this being the story n the event of Al declaring...it would sidestep any good news (And Hillary would be leading the charge)...

Thompson quit LA Law before he was in 10 states due to the rule...it is a very grey area, and we don't want shades of grey
