Spacey on Gore point in 'Recount'

By Nellie Andreeva

Sept 25, 2007

Oscar winner Kevin Spacey leads the cast of HBO Films' "Recount," which chronicles the turbulent events in Florida after the 2000 presidential election.

Tom Wilkinson, Denis Leary, Ed Begley Jr., Laura Dern, John Hurt and Bob Balaban co-star in the film, from Spring Creek/Mirage Prods. in association with Tigger Street Prods. and Everyman Pictures.

Written by Danny Strong and to be directed by Jay Roach, "Recount" focuses on the ordinary people caught up in the extraordinary events surrounding the fateful vote. It begins with the Nov. 7 elections, follows the slew of controversial court challenges and recounts and culminates with the Dec. 12 Supreme Court ruling that effectively handed George W. Bush the presidency.

Spacey will play Ron Klain, Vice President Al Gore's former chief of staff who headed the Democratic candidate's legal efforts in Florida as general counsel for the Gore-Lieberman Recount Committee. It marks Spacey's first TV project in 13 years, since the 1994 HBO movie "Doomsday Gun."

Wilkinson will play former U.S. Secretary of State James Baker, who served as chief legal adviser for Bush during the 2000 election campaign and oversaw the Florida recount. It is Wilkinson's third HBO project this year, along with the film "A Number" and the mini "John Adams."

Leary, who recently landed his second Emmy for his starring role on FX's "Rescue Me," will play Gore's chief field operative Michael Whouley.

Begley will play litigator David Boies, who became the Gore campaign's top lawyer during the recount and argued for him in front of the Supreme Court.

Dern will play former Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris.

Hurt will play former Secretary of State Warren Christopher. He was sent to supervise the contested Florida recount for Gore.

Balaban will play Benjamin Ginsberg, national counsel to the Bush-Cheney presidential campaigns in 2000 and 2004, who played a central role in the 2000 Florida recount.

Production is slated to begin this month in Tallahassee and Jacksonville, Fla., for a 2008 premiere on HBO. It is not clear whether "Recount" will air before or after the November presidential elections.

Sydney Pollack, who originally was tapped to direct "Recount" but pulled out because of health reasons, executive produces the film alongside Spring Creek's Paula Weinstein, HBO Films' Len Amato and Roach.

You beat me to it--I was going to post about this movie this morning--I just heard about it for the first time this morning on the news.
You're right on top of things when it comes to Gore aren't you! :Y:

I wonder who will play Gore? The article tells who will play who but there's no mention of Gore himself....? Maybe he won't even be in it, which would be weird.....

Very fitting that it will be on HBO--where my Bill is

Oh, Darrell Hammond from SNL MUST play Gore! He can do Al soooooo well.

Or, Alec Baldwin.

I believe the perfect Al Gore actor would could combine the physical appearance of Alec Baldwin with the intellectual aspects of Jeff Goldbloom. Goldbloom usually plays the genius type in movies such as "Independence Day" and "Jurrassic Park". I like Darrel Hammond's impersonation of Al as well.

You bet I am and I wouldn't want anyone to forget stolen election 2000. I'm glad there are others out there who feel the same way.

As for who could play AL GORE if he's even in it. How about Jonathan Frakes, always thought he kind of looked a bit like AL.
