Title: The Beatles...not Yoko!
al001 - July 1, 2007 08:58 AM (GMT)
Well I awoke early to watch one of my greatest inspritions on Larry King this morning. The Beatles. I had seen John, George and Paul in seperate settings before but never together and once more I did not not get to see them together...But one horrifying thought suddenly hit me. Yoko... Yoko was in the show and calling herself a Beatle. Yoko was never a Beatle, and never would or will be a Beatle. She is just a talentless girl that happened to love John. For that I am graetful because All you need is Love but she could never even come close to the dirt on Paul's feet as he crossed Abby Road.
Take a seat in the stands Yoko...you don't deserve to be on stage.

As a bonifide founder and supporter of the Fans of the Artist Known as Yoko Ono, I protest this slam against her. She is a classically trained musician and vocalist. Yoko was a celebrated artist and performer (and still is) long before she became attached with John Lennon. She was the muse that spurred IMAGINE, INSTANT KARMA, MIND GAMES, ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, COME TOGETHER, REVOLUTION, GIVE PEACE A CHANCE, and so many other songs and movements. She is the mother of SEAN LENNON and KYOKO.
TWO VIRGINS was not a publicity stunt, it was real.
As John sang:
"In the middle of a cloud
In the middle of a cloud I call your name
OH YOKO!"

Sorry to upset you ALGoreFan but like it or not and like Yoko or not she was not a Beatle, she married one and the one I consider the most talented.
She was classically trained but so was Van Halen, and hundreds of others.
Lennon wrote Across the Universe while sitting in bed with his first wife and talking. The words kept popping into his head and he got up and wrote it. I assume your talking about Revolution Number 9 which was a collaboration of Revolution and Revolution Number 1 (before her). Her contribution to Mind Games was to be rolled into the room in a hospital bed after a car accident. Her part in Come Together consists of one line "Ono sideboard" which John did and it was Paul's changing the tempo of the song that made it.
John does admit she deserved some credit for Imagine But Give Peace a Chance also had the input of Harrison, Clapton and the many others who came into the sleep in.
There can be no involvement contributed to Yoko for Mind Games since John wrote it after dropping her political drive and striving out to find himself again. Instant Karma John wrote and recorded in 7 days and she may well have added to it but it did go to the Plastic band and everyone that took part in any of their recordings was considered as a part of the Plastic such as Clapton, Harrison, Alan White of Yes, Keith Moon and Bonnie and Delaney all of who had influence on the music.
And your right, TWO VIRGINS was not a publicity stunt, it was real. So real it never made the charts in the UK and only reached a whooping number 124 in America. It was done with sound loops recorded by John and Peter Shatton with John trying different instruments and effects while talking to Yoko, who ad libbed to what he said. It was only after the second release with Give Peace a Chance that any notice was given.
If she was a celebrated artist before she hooked up with John than it was by few and she is not an active artist now but lives quietly in the mountains.
I'm sure she is a wonderful mother to Sean and Kyoko but she also denied Julian one cent of John's estate.
I have little doubt she did inspire John in many ways but let's face it. John was the talent and she was not a Beatle.

Whoa, weird that I saw this topic just now, as a dear friend of mine just sent me a VHS tape of the Larry King interview in question. I am a HUGE Beatles fan and, sadly, I don't have cable (gasp!), so I could not watch the show when it aired. My friend kindly sent me the tape, but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, having just received it last night, as I said. ANYWAY: I knew that Yoko was on the show, but did she really refer to herself as a Beatle? I mean, I can see why they had her on: They had both living Beatles and the widows of both Beatles who are no longer with us. Plus they had George Martin, "the fifth Beatle" and his son, both of whom definitely deserve a place in a show about the show LOVE. But if Yoko really referred to herself as a Beatle, I am going to have a major COW. Yes. A COW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She is no more a Beatle than the cactus I'm staring at on my desk is!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do not even get me started on Yoko.
-_-
Anyway, verdict: Yoko = NOT a Beatle. I have spoken.

No, I honestly can't recall her referring to herself as a Beatle. I was just very upset that the first image I saw was her. I woke early to see a show about the Beatles which like you I'm a hugh fan of. Have been since I first saw them on Ed Sullivan as a kid.
I just felt they could have spent less time with the widows, who I do feel for because they were the love of my favorite artists, and more of the Beatles.
I mean they have enough footage to spend days showing nothing but the Beatles.
I do recall one show I must relate to you since your a fan also. When I saw Harrison in Houston he had Ravi Shankar (proberbly misspelled) anyway Ravi and his family came out with Sitars and began to play which seemed to me to be the perfect time to go relieve myself. Well half way up the stairs everyone began to cheer and Ravi walked up to the mic. and said "Thank you...if you enjoyed us tuning up that much you should really like the music."
Watch the show, it's still worth the time and there's some good interview footage with Paul and Ringo.

"No, I honestly can't recall her referring to herself as a Beatle. I was just very upset that the first image I saw was her."
Totally understandable!!!! I find the sight of her to be roughly equivalent to chomping down on a huge ball of tin foil. *cringe*

I definitely will watch it. And, fyi, I bought the CD soundtrack to the show LOVE and I was soooooooooooo, so, so, so, SO blown away! Had anyone else "tinkered" with the Beatles original music, I would have considered it sacrelige, but since it was George Martin, whom I do consider "the fifth Beatle" and who has such a respect for, and understanding of, the Beatles music, I knew that LOVE would be special. And it did not disappoint. In one listen it became one of my top fave albums of all time. Get it, that is all I can say!!! Get it.
As for Yoko, ...well, she's Yoko, what can one say? I didn't know she had denied Julian a penny of John's estate. What a royal bee-otch.

I hear George Harrison advising me not to be attached ... but, here goes ...
Controversial issues have been discussed before...
But really people . John, Yoko, and the Beatles?? Can't we all just get along? :?:
If you're keeping score I used to dislike Yoko. Probably because my friends and most everyone I knew felt that way. Upon reflection, I probably just didn't get her, and was going along with the herd back then. If John loved Yoko Ono that's good enough for me. She has proved her true dedication to John in shepherding his music all these years.
Plastic Ono Band
Rock and Roll Sister!

"Have been since I first saw them on Ed Sullivan as a kid."
ME TOO!
Now that I've totally dated myself and given away the fact that I'm ancient, but that one viewing as a little girl in those few minutes had such impact on my mind and soul that lasts to this day.
On the subject of Yoko, of course I could never stand her but I realize her influence on John, his love for her, made his music/songs all the more magical and brilliant--they WERE meant to be together.
And that is my unasked-for 2 cents

Well, you said "Yoko was in the show and calling herself a Beatle." Then you said "No, I honestly can't recall her referring to herself as a Beatle."
That is what they call a smear campaign.
Comparing Yoko to Van Halen? Wow!!!!!!!!! I bet Valerie Bertenelli is proud.
Ask any early '60's artist who Yoko is and you will eat your words mocking her celebrated status. How do you think Lennon found out about her? Puleeeeeeeeeeeze!
You said "Yoko was in the show and calling herself a Beatle." Then you said "No, I honestly can't recall her referring to herself as a Beatle."
Do you hate Yoko that much?
I held a party for her for her RISING tour in Chicago. I invited her via email. I had Grapefruits and Dream Soup for appetizers. Our group met. I brought a ladder and magnifying glass, then taped a piece of paper to the ceiling above it.
Guess who called an hour into the after concert party? An anonymous person asking how many folks were there. 20 minutes later Yoko and Sean knocked on the door.
Yoko took pics with myself and others. Sean climbed the ladder and jokingly said the same line his pop did.
I have never questioned the artistic importance of Yoko and I encourage any Yoko hater to investigate. You'll find a woman who not only played muse to Lennon, but played muse to the world.
OH YOKO!

BTW, you will find few bigger Beatle fans than I.
