MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin Republicans have a better impression of former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani than they do of hometown political giant Tommy Thompson, according to a new poll released Tuesday.
The University of Wisconsin Survey Center's Badger Poll asked for impressions of presidential candidates in each party, in addition to potential candidate Al Gore.
Giuliani had the highest favorable rating among Republicans at 64 percent, beating out Thompson at 58 percent. John McCain came in a distant third at 16 percent.
Gore was viewed favorably by 62 percent of Democrats, followed by New York Sen. Hillary Clinton with 60 percent. Illinois Sen. Barack Obama came in third with 57 percent, followed closely by former vice-presidential candidate John Edwards.The random poll was conducted between June 7 and June 15 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
The Badger Poll reveals that only four candidates have a new favorable rating among Wisconsin independents.
Giuliani had a 22 percent favorable rating among independents with Obama the second choice at 19 percent.
Former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson was viewed favorably by 16 percent. John McCain, who has had strong support from independents in the past, was viewed favorably by 9 percent.
Mitt Romney along with Clinton, Gore and Edwards all had negative favorable ratings among Wisconsin's independents.
