Title: Spam and Porn posts and unwanted ads
Description: How I deal with it in my HGHW forum
Reverend Wally - June 4, 2007 06:23 PM (GMT)
Every day it seems I log into this forum and see a "SPAM" post that leads people to pictures of blatant sexual activity or a link to take a viewer to a porn site.
This is affecting the first impression that a person has when they log on here for the first time. Not good for our objectives.
I have had to change the activation on my forums to "Admin" activation. That way I can view the persons profile first to get an idea of who they are. Also, sometimes it is imperative to ban a person's IP.
I know these are tough measures, but the only other way to combat this is to have more moderators so there can always be someone on line that can nip this activity in the bud.

Wally, I ban user names and IP addresses on a daily basis. The list has grown huge. These spambots are able to come back under a different user name and IP address and post their filth that way.
I could require admin. or mod. preview of all posts by all new members, but that puts people off, and most are here with good intentions. I think for now we'll just have to remain diligent and keep the site cleaned up.
Speaking of which, I've been cleaning up some posts at AGO, and I noticed your use of words we would consider harsh in polite company. Please refrain from using such language, no matter how irate you become. Report the offensive post, and we will take care of it. More so than this site, AGO is the home of the Draft Gore campaign. We've received media attention, and many people go to AGO to keep up with the campaign. It doesn't look good at all to see that kind of language and response posted there.

Karen,
I do apologize for any harsh language. Maybe yabu has rubbed off on me.
My intense "dislike" for anyone in the Bush Mob sometimes pushes me over the edge when I post. You have my permission to alter any stupid things I do LOL.
I just am adamant about repairing my country's democracy and about getting Gore into the White House.

I understand completely, Wally. No apologies necessary. Even I, even-tempered that I am, once called someone on this board an idiot and I forget what else. It was a day when I was really stressed and I had no patience for anything. I went back and deleted my post because I know how bad it makes us look.
All of us need to keep in mind that we're in the public eye now, and as the official Draft Gore movement, what we do reflects on Gore. I'd appreciate you reminding others at AGO of this fact. Thanks. ;)

We are only human, but I do feel that we do a pretty good job of catching that filth as soon as we can and deleting it. I know Wayne as well as myself have deleted that kind of 'stuff' just about every day.
It's usually the first thing I look for before anything else.

It's pretty easy to spot, too, because it's almost always posted with a :) face.

I, too, apologize for any negative input on my part at AGO. I think I'm pretty good about resisting the name-calling urge, but some of my comments may tick off some, how shall I put it... 'less liberal' individuals. Ignorance has become a great pet peeve of mine in years of late, so I don't tolerate it very well. And I'm such an opinionated @%&(%. lol Really I'm very sweet, I promise!
Anyway, I'll try to be more constructive and focus on the real task at hand which is Al Gore in '08.
p.s. earthmother: I met a friend of yours, Brian Staton(sp?), at the Impeachment Town Hall Mtg in Charlotte on Friday! He was wearing a Gore '08 button, so I struck up a conversation. He told me about the UPS problem - that stinks! Great guy, we exchanged numbers, so he can help me get a group going in Winston-Salem, and I can help him in Charlotte or where ever he needs it. It was a good meeting, lots of good speakers and passionate energy; close to 100 turned out.

You all do a great job. Maybe it is just that most of the time I sort of feel like that is the first thing I see posted in here almost everyday.

No need for apologies. We all crumble in the face of these attacks sometimes. The day I called that jerk an idiot on this board some months back was a low point for me. Sacre bleu! :o But a person can take just so much, you know?
Anyway, yes, Brian is an incredible person. So glad you met him, and if you can help each other out, that would be great. That's what I find most uplifting about this whole thing we're doing--the spirit of togetherness in our effort to get Gore in the White House. We are a strong community, and it's a wonderful feeling!

I think it's usually the first thing you see because no one gets here to take care of it in the morning before you get online. Our two active moderators are on the West Coast, so I'm usually the first one here in the morning, and I attend to all the other urgent things in Goredom before I log in here. I'll make a point of logging in earlier to avoid having people see the offending posts . . .

I agree you do a good job of keeping the site clean. Everytime I found one those posts and notified one of you guys it was off in minutes. I think that's a good, fast response.
