Non-runner Gore third in presidential poll
NEW YORK, May 8 (UPI) -- Despite not being a declared candidate for the 2008 U.S. presidential race, former Vice President Al Gore ranked third among Democrats in a USA Today poll.
The Gallup Poll asked 1,010 adults Friday through Sunday about their preferences, and among Democrats, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., ranked first with 38 percent, 15 points ahead of her nearest rival, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., with 23 percent.
Gore was the first choice for 14 percent of Democratic respondents, the report said.
Among Republicans, former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani led the pack with 34 percent support, trailed by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., with 20 percent.
As for President George W. Bush, his approval ratings remained in an eight-month low below 40 percent, the newspaper said. He scored 47 percent approval for handling terrorism, 39 percent on the economy and 35 percent on foreign affairs. Bush logged only 30 percent approval in the poll for his handling of Iraq.
