Title: Gore and Bloomberg At Tribeca
Description: More Jokes On Presidential Run

IanOC - April 25, 2007 08:29 PM (GMT)
Gore won't let the rumors die, now will he? He joked about the presidential race with Mike Bloomberg, and praised other candidates for making global warming a campaign issue. Hmm...

Bloomberg, Gore joke about 2008 rumors

NEW YORK -- It was like watching two people at a doorway, gesturing for the other to go ahead, as former Vice President Al Gore and Mayor Michael Bloomberg nudged each other toward the 2008 presidential race during a joint appearance on Wednesday.

The pair were together to help kick off the Tribeca Film Festival, opening this year with several environmentally themed films to raise awareness. Global warming has long been Gore's pet cause _ resulting in an Oscar win for his documentary on the subject _ and it is newly becoming one of Bloomberg's priorities.

"His recent success has even prompted some talk that he might again try for the White House," Bloomberg said when introducing Gore. "Don't you just hate those rumors about running for president?"

Neither one has entered next year's crowded contest for the White House, but speculation persists for both the Democratic vice president and the Republican billionaire mayor.

Moments later, Gore was asked whether he believes the presidential candidates are doing enough to discuss global warming on the campaign trail.

"Well, I think Mike is," Gore deadpanned.

The mayor, standing to Gore's right, turned red and laughed.

Gore went on to praise the environmental plans proposed by Democratic candidates John Edwards and Sen. Chris Dodd, and noted that Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton have also discussed the issue.

"I think that there should be a much greater focus, sure," Gore said. "We have a chance to see, by the time this campaign enters its next six-month period, that this discussion may become really front and center, I hope so."

Gore was also full of praise for the package of environmental proposals that Bloomberg announced on Sunday as part of his effort to reduce New York City's carbon emissions by 30 percent before the year 2030. The plan includes the hotly-debated idea of charging motorists extra to drive into the most heavily congested parts of Manhattan on weekdays as a way to force more drivers into using mass transit.

Gore endorsed the plan and called it a "gutsy" move.

Asked later about the vice president's kind words, Bloomberg returned the praise.

"People talk about Al Gore being a presidential candidate a lot more seriously than joking about me. This guy could be a presidential candidate," Bloomberg said. "He certainly has experience ... and I hope Al Gore enters the race. I think that would be good for the country."

Once again thank you AGIML for the story of Al in NYC and those photographs. You seem to be THE BEST source of new Gore photos there could be.

Apparently I was mistaken when I thought Al may be taking a bit of a break before The Assault on Reason is published. Or, maybe this is a sort of break compared to whats going to happen once he announces. :coolwink:

A Gore Bloomberg partnership would be wonderful, whichever direction

I keep seeing hints that Al might just back Bloomberg on an independent Green ticket or something like that

(Bloomberg of course is a liberal, green loving Democrat who makes things happen, even if on paper they may not appear popular til six months later)

(unlike Bush who makes things happen that are LESS popular six months later)

Good picture.

ReElect:

Gore did not endorse Bloomberg, but Bloomberg did endorse Gore. And an endorsement from the mayor of NYC is just what Al needs to stick it to Hilary and Rudy.

This is big news, as far as I am concerned.

Thank you AGIML for providing the pictures. That picture of Gore by himself looks very presidential. Would look good on a dollar bill or quarter. And he does look like he's losing weight, which I take as a good sign!!

Yes he does look very presidential and I've always thought he looks great in black. :D

Here's a few more photos from yesterday:
