I'm hoping this reaches Mr. Gore because I had some thoughts that might be useful.
Anyone who cares about the environment is trying to find Earth-friendly ways to generate energy. We use wind & ocean power to move turbines to create electricity so why aren't we using other methods of motion to generate power? We got all these gyms & fitness centers, so why not connect generators to the exercise bikes & treadmills that could be creating electricity?
Another idea: what about increased promotion of public transportation?
I don't live that far from D.C. but there's no Metro rail in my area. There are more people living farther away from D.C. because residency is cheaper. Instead of more traffic up & down I-66 creating pollution, there could be a train running parallel to I-66 which would decrease pollution, highway traffic, automotive accidents, stress from traveling, & bad weather wouldn't prevent people from going to work.
It's 2007 so why isn't telecommuting enforced in more workplaces? We got broadband so why aren't we using it? If we need to re-engineer the internet to accommodate greater telecommuting, then more jobs would be created.
I know I sound like a nut to some but there's going to come a day when those beautiful blue skies won't be around anymore.

I saw a study relating to this, if I can possibly find it I will post a link. The end result was that despite the amount of personal energy used during exercise it just wouldn't generate enough energy to justify the cost of "catching" it for use.

Not to be cynical, but people generally like to get together and party. Most face to face time could be spent online for virtually free, but the "after-meeting" at the pub would be a thing of the past. Plus, people like to get away from their work place.
You don't sound like a nut, in fact you sound like the rest of the people here who really care. Unfortunately, human nature seems programmed for self defeat.
