Gallup: 'Don't Know' Takes Big Lead in 2008 Race for President

NEW YORK The frontrunner for winning the White House in 2008 is a true dark horse: Don't Know. A new Gallup survey, which offers a twist on its usual preference poll. includes "Don't Know" as an option. It now wins with 38%, trailed by Sen. Hillary Clinton at 15% an Sen. John McCain at 11%.

Gallup Poll director Frank Newport sums it up this way today: "Many Americans cannot spontaneously think of the name of a person they would like to see elected president in 2008. While this lack of firm conviction about presidential candidates over a year before the first 2008 primaries is not necessarily unusual, it underscores the certainty of change as various politicians announce their candidacies and jockey for position in the months ahead."

Sen. Barack Obama already is in the #3 slot, at 6%.

Five other possible candidates are picked by between 2% and 5%: former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former Sen. John Edwards, Sec. of State Condoleezza Rice, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, and former Vice President Al Gore.

This "top-of-mind" survey was taken Nov. 27-29.

McCain leads Clinton among Independents by a narrow margin.

Don't Know is a good answer

Even political junkies like ourselves need a break from constant politics all the time. We just went through the 2006 mid-term elections one month ago. With very successful results for Democrats I might add

Give it a break, eh?

It also shows how wide open the race is at this point. Anyone who thinks that Hillary has the Dem nomination wrapped up, or McCain has the Repub nomination wrapped up, or anyone has anything wrapped up are way, way, way ahead of themselves.

America, are you looking for a great President? We have the perfect suggestion :good:

I figure that as long as there are so many "don't knows," those are people who can be swayed over to our side. :good:

no body is really thinking about elections right now. we just finished one. people are thinking of gifts and shopping and Christmas for the most part anyway. Or family holiday plannings. Also maybe people are maybe not too happy with the assembled field of potential runners at this point. we should start seeing better polling come spring.

"Don't know" is better than some of the choices, but let's find a way to turn these "don't knows" into AL GORE.
