On CNN's Wednesday Situation Room show (the last of three grueling segments) they will have the Illinois Sen. Barack Obama. He tells Wolf his exit strategy for Iraq. Tune in at 7 p.m. ET and we'll see if he is really all those other people think he is.
Did anyone watch? I've had my hands full all day because our 98-year-old next-door neighbor died during the night. He is survived by his 95-year-old wife. We were very close to both of them--surrogate grandparents for me and my kids. Rough day.
So did anyone catch Obama? If so, what did you think?
I found too many things I preferred over listening to Obama. I posted in hope someone might want to see it and give a detail of what he said. But so far to no avail.
I have checked the web and CNN does not have the transcript and very little of what he said. All I can get out of any of it is that he calls for a gradual withdrawal over the near future. Moving troops to the Safe Northern areas and other surrounding countries.
Obama admitted in an interview before he was too young for VN and never served in Gulf War 1 so his knowledge of actual combat is limited. When he said this he also called for the stopping of calling those like McCain, Murtha, Cleland, Kerry and those who have served but disagree with Bush cowards. On this I agree. They are not cowards for disagreeing with Bush who is a coward and never served nor will he or anymore of his family.
What I disagree with is the gradual withdrawal. Only one who has been through a gradual withdrawal can know the danger that those left behind face as they try to keep a level of safety similar to what they had when they were at full strength, which our troops in Iraq have never been.
Murtha's plan was sound when first offered and I don't think it's changed. We need to pull all our troops back to Kuwait so their close if they are needed and I mean truly needed. We have no business in the middle of a Civil War that we can't stop, even though we probably helped to create the conditions which led up to it.
Everyday we are on the ground in Iraq is another day an American solider will die. And for what, to create a stable country which we will never be able to do. Only the Iraqi people can do that. We need to come home in a manner that will get all out in a safe withdrawal, not a few at a time while leaving others behind to face the blunt of the violence that is growing.
We've been telling the Iraqis they need to stand up for themselves for years now. It's time we left and told them they were warned and they have had plenty of time. Now it's their turn... so do it.
Let's not tell another parent their child has died or another child one of their parents serving there has been killed, and in many cases both parents are there.
Many are afraid that if we leave Iraq will turn into another Iran. Guess what, if this is going to happen we can't stop it. The Iran-Iraq war lasted 8 years and ended in a stalemate and this was when Iraq was at full strength and we were giving Iraq plenty of help, including Chemical weapons.
We can do whatever we wish but when we leave Iraq it will become what the Iraqi people want it to be so let's leave now and let them decide for themselves. There is major chaos there now and when we leave most likely even more. But those who say they want peace know the ones causing the trouble and they could stop it if they would work together instead of depending on us.
We were the Bull that destroyed the pottery barn but the Bull can't put it back together. When they reach a stable state we could offer to help in reconstruction and they would gladly accept the money but the same help can come from the other Arab nations where the need for a stable Iraq would be higher. And regardless of the rhetoric that if we don't win there they will come to the streets of America. That is B.S. If some do come here and there are probably cells here now, they won't be Iraqi. Just as none of the 9/11 group were Iraqis.
If we must keep Americans there let it be Bush, Cheney, most of the Republican party, their families and all those die hard Bushies who support the war but have made no sacrifice or ever served in combat..
they are animals over there and don't want us there either. the only way out of there is sure and fast. provide the iraq govt (if you can call it that) a 90 day warning and that gives them plenty of time to set up a draft to enlist enough soldiers to protect themselves because we ain't gonna do it any longer. they have had years now to
get themselves together over there. time for us to leave.
