Nelson defeats Harris in U.S. Senate race

ORLANDO, Fla. - U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson easily won re-election to a second term Tuesday over Republican challenger Katherine Harris, who staged a bungled, longshot bid to unseat the popular incumbent.

Nelson touted his reputation as a moderate senator who could work across party lines. Harris, famous for her role in overseeing the Florida recount that gave George W. Bush the presidency in 2000, couldn't overcome myriad campaign problems and trailed in the polls all along.

Nelson's win was based on a statistical analysis of the vote from voter interviews conducted for The Associated Press by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International.

"I'm grateful to the Lord and I'm grateful to the people of Florida," Nelson said by telephone from his Orlando hotel suite, where he was gathered with his wife, son, daughter and others. "There are a lot of challenges we have to solve and I'm ready to go to work."

That's a particularly satisfying victory, given the history.

And don't forget the date........November 7. Coudn't rig this one, Katherine. What sweet revenge, the witch losing on the same day as the 2000 election.

Now if she'll just vanish into complete obscurity. Never to be seen or heard from again.

:D

When I voted here in Florida, I voted paper ballot (of course). I accidently grazed the pen over Harris' oval...but they instructed us to make sure we completely fill out the oval so I thought it would be okay and completely filled out the oval of Bill Nelson.

Well, when I tried to insert the ballot into the machine, it kept spitting it out indicating I voted twice in one category. I had two options, I could fill out another ballot, or just skip the U.S. Senate category.

You better believe I filled it out again!

I'm glad to hear at least they have a system that catches things like that now.
