"I am Al Gore and I used to be the next president of the United States," he said. When that line brought laughter, he deadpanned, "That's not funny."
After five minutes of self-depreciating humor, he delivered a lecture and slide show on global warming. He noted increases in carbon dioxide concentrations and emissions, global temperatures, droughts and floods and human population over time. The 10 hottest years on record have been in the past 13 years, he said.
As the Arctic ice cap melts, sun rays will be absorbed into the water, warming the pole by as much as 12 degrees, which could change wind patterns and ocean currents so that the entire climatic system is thrown out of whack, he warned. "We can stop all this but we have got to act," he said.
Gore's speech was the 62nd annual Bownocker Lecture in geological sciences at Ohio State. He also met privately with faculty from the Byrd Polar Research Center.
