Should ENGLISH be the "Official Language" in the United States of America?

Cut me a break folks.............Mexico, Latin America and South America have SPAINISH as their "Official Language" as it should be!

We've had this argument before here. Many people think it's wrong to force immigrants to speak English.
To me, it's a ridiculous argument. You want to be American, you have to learn to speak the language we speak here. No other country in the world has issues with this. When an immigrant goes to Italy from Russia, do you think the Italians are expected to somehow communicate with the person in Russian? I don't think so.
Why should it be any different here? Throughout our history, immigrant groups coming here maintained some of their own heritage while becoming assimilated into American culture. They understood that being an American meant learning to speak the language. Why is it that immigrants of today feel this shouldn't apply to them?
If you don't want to learn the language and become an American, why come here? Just to make money? To me, that's not what America is all about.

English is the "official" Trade Language of most of the world...Of course it is the National Language...but many 'emigres' already KNOW how to speak English...don't let 'em fool ya...they speak Spanish so that WE who don't know the language won't know what they say...
It doesn't "hurt" Americans to learn Spanish, or French or German for that manner...are our brains so narrowly focused that we can't accept to learn the culture of other nations?
THEY hewed and cried because we didn't have enough interpreters at the NSA that knew Arabic or Pharzi while they continue to opine over the fact we should know ONLY English among Romance or Ethnic tongues...so why is it a crime to know and use Spanish?
The Xenophobia has hit NEW levels of dangerous living...We now have Minutemen building fences on the Mexican Border because of the 19 Hispanics that hijacked planes on 9.11.2001....hmm oh wait! That's right...THEY WERE ARABS!
Building fences with our neighbors...and waiting for the shootings of innocents by our National Guard...now THAT is insane!
Instead of building a FENCE with Mexico...WE should be INVADING them "economically" from the North with NEW Businesses!...WE need to get mexico and points south to DROP their barriers...NOT BUILD MORE ON OUR SIDE!
But let the GOP continue to fan the flames of "racism"...it WILL be their downfall...before anyone gets an idea..MY mother was a "pure blood" Portuguese from Hawaii...so when I see somebody putting down my Hispanic Brothers...It makes me ANGRY...because ethnically I am HALF Hispanic! :mad:
You are correct EM...it doesn't HURT these "emigres" to learn and use English...but it doesn't HURT us to lkearn and use other languages as well...we lead by example...so when a pack of "rednecks" don't want to expand their minds anywhere past the use of English alone...then these illegals look at it this way...if you don't want to learn then why should we?...Wehave become an isolated nation over the last 5 years...and Al Gore is a "globalist"...and some am I! THAT is why we are WORRIED about GLOBAL Warming! Are you a "globalist" too? :?:
I agree FreeBird that English IS our National Language...but why NOT learn Spanish?...Ya NEVER know when you may want to go to Cancun...Or Monterrey...Or Caracas...or Bogota...Wouldn't it be "good" to speak THEIR language as well? To TEACH English then a knowledge of other languages is always helpful!
Yo tengo un lapiz...mi lapiz es azul...don't look at me I have a red pencil box...my mother was Portuguese but she forbade any of us to use anything but English at home...I feel she didn't want us singled out...but I feel "stupider" for not learning other tongues....had two years of Spanish in High School...Forgot it...Had two years of German in College...Forgot it! Why? BECAUSE we ONLY use ENGLISH in this NATION!!! :tongue:

If America is a truely "free" country then the people should be free to speak whatever language they want to speak.
Both the Paraclete and Freebird are right that English is already the official language. It is the language of trade & commerce in this country, we don't need government to tell us that. Nor have I ever met an immigrant who wanted to get ahead refuse to learn English, that's is just another right-wing myth.
How come the GOP always professes that it believes in less government interference unless it has to do with the poor or what people do in there own bedrooms or what a woman does with her own body. How come their ideal of less government only applies to what rich white men do to make money?
