I am a subscriber and adamant reader of Vanity Fair magazine. I currently reside in Brooklyn, NY however I am originally from New Jersey. I was beyond shocked and appalled when I read the story "Letter From West Virginia" by Michael Shnayerson.

All of this seems unconscionable to me. How is that we can sing America the Beautiful with the words:

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

How is it possible that families that go back 10's of generations are being forced out of their homes in Coal River Valley, West Virginia. How is it possible that a company can be so powerful as to destroy 400,000+ acres of "diverse temperate forest" and no one do anything!

How is it possible for the Massey Coal Company to receive 4,268 citations from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection between 2000 and 2005 and NOTHING be done about it!

When I read about what was happening to Larry Gibson, I was infuriated to say the absolute least! All I could think of was, why don't you pick on someone your own size! As a New Yorker I became very aggressive in my thinking and would love it if thousands of us could go down there, stare at you and your workers in the eyes and say "I’m Larry Gibson, what are you going to do!"

Are these people aware that we happen to be able to live only through our dependence on trees which just so happen to supply us with oxygen. You know, that stuff we need to survive!

My family's history comes from the Ozark mountains and now that this horrific atrocity has been brought to my attention, I will do everything possible to stop this. I have already sent many emails to executives at Massey as well as writing the Clinton Foundation. I will contact each and every Environmental Agency to take action.

My rage is at a boiling point. Please tell me ANYTHING I can do to help with this effort. Seriously, I can not and will not stand by and let this happen. In 2006, how do we let someone's cottage be burned and attempted murder plots put into action! I have a mixed racial background, there was a time when my parents were not legally able to marry. It took a while, but we fought those issues and we sure as hell can fight this one!
