Title: ACLU - should I join or not?
Description: what are pros&cons of ACLU membership?

I'd like to see what people have to say about becoming "A card carrying member of the American Civil Liberties Union" and or supporting it.
I always hear about this and that and the ACLU and for some reason I have gotten the idea that they are a pain in butt organization. But when I look at what they stand for I find that I agree with most if not all of it.
Please if you got an opinion, a story or experience please spit it out.
As corporations and government seem to be more and more entwined I am beginning to feel smaller and smaller and certainly more and more powerless. The Bush administration is cooking up a magic stew that feeds the rich, poisons the middle class and starves the poor.
With the way Lobbyists dominate the ears of our representatives, my voice, any single voice is like a whisper in a shouting match. I figure the ACLU just might give it some volume and protect our rights that Bush has claimed as his domain.
Yeh I think I may be getting just a bit paranoid. Everytime my PC hangs up I wonder if it isn't because they have detected some anti-bush (and there is alot) sentence in my email I send out. Things like - the word "war" should be replaced with "an excuse to kill women and children" - just might not fit into what they feel is acceptible under the Patriot Act, so I would be a legitamate target in their eyes.
Even going to this website is probably something they would consider subversive.
I don't go to church on Sundays. I do pray everyday, but I don't tithe in the church sense. Instead I have a list of organizations like the Red Cross, Salvation Army, NRDC, WWF, Humane Society of the United States and I occasionally help my many friends who have lost their jobs in Bush's thriving Economy. I alternately give monthly contributions to them and I'm thinking about supporting the ACLU.
Is there any conflict with supporting Al Gore and joining the ACLU.

On the whole, I would say the ACLU is a good organization. There have been times, though, when I've heard them being involved in some case where I thought they were being ridiculous. Of course, now I can't remember what the cases were about so I could give you an example.
I seriously doubt that there'd be any conflict between joining the ACLU and supporting Gore. His position on most major issues matches theirs.

I know this is an old thread, but as a "card carrying member..." I would like to provide a link:
ACLUBasically, the ACLU is committed to defending and enforcing the Constitution and the Bill Of Rights. I am amazed at the number of people who claim to be patriotic Americans, yet they slam the ACLU. An injustice to one is an injustice to all.

Left, Right, or center, the ACLU defends your rights and the founding
principals of the United States.
It is because of my strong beliefs in Human Rights and Civil liberties
and their subjugation under this regime, that I feel th the necessity
to back the strongest candidate possible to head the ticket.
And that would be, Al Gore!
I am proudly a card carrying Member of the ACLU! :good: [B]

I would say that if you feeling like joining the ACLU then do it!
Someone will criticize you, someone will think you're joining an organization that coddles criminals and does not support justice for crime victims. The ACLU defends these folks right to say just those kinds of stupid, uninformed statements.
There's mom, The Bill of Rights, baseball, The Constitution, apple pie, and the ACLU! It all about freedom and America. :good:
