Title: DNC 2008 Convention Dates Announced

ap215 - November 4, 2005 09:54 PM (GMT)
Howard Dean announced today that the DNC Convention in 2008 will take place on Augu 25-28 after the Beijing Olympics. Location TBA after the '06 midterm elections.

Chuck Schumer suggests the convention be held in NYC but personally i think it should be in a red state to sitck it to the republicans and to make a case that we will fight back and we can win in a red state.

Of course Schumer wants it in NYC, but I think that's a very poor idea. Maybe he's thinking in terms of Hillary being the nominee, I don't know. But why would they want to have it in the same place where the Repugs had it in 2004?

Hmmm . . . how about Nashville or Memphis?

Only if AL GORE is the nominee. :)

Seattle, San Diego, Nashville, or Atlanta....Dems should think outside the box...Manifest destiny and all that....The West is furtile ground...or perhaps hold it in one of the cities of the New South with hopes of appealing anew to the blue collar, transplanted, or disillusioned in Dixie...Anyone else agree?

I definitely like the sound of Nashivlle if Gore is the nominee.

If not Tennessee, I would love to have it in Atlanta!

My vote is for OHIO. Because it will spotlight Rethug corruption and election fraud there, and OHIO is ours to win. We're going to take the state back from the Repugs there.

But Cleveland? Cincinnati? Don't know...

As a New Yorker I should point out that everytime the convention was held in New York, most recently '76 and '92, the Dems won the election. I like the idea of holding it the south but sometimes when a convention is held in a city that is typically a stronghold for another party it is seen as pandering.
Usually conventions cities are chosen long before anyone knows who the nominee will be. When there is an incumbent President or Vice President it is considered bad form to hold the convention in the nominee's home state. Last year was just a coincidence that the convention was held in Boston.
Also, Schumer's request most likely had to do with him being from NYC and wanting to bring the money a convention would generate to his home city & state. I doubt it had anything to do with Hillary. We all got to get over the Hillary-obsession people. Everything that happens doesn't revolve around Hillary. Everything that a Dem Senator or Rep does or says doesn't always have to do with Hillary. If we keep looking at everything with the knee-jerk reaction that it must be about Hillary, then we are consigning ourselves to the luntic fringe rather than becoming a true political force.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it a tradition that the party that is control of the White House be the last major party to hold their convention? Allow me to show everyone here, starting from 1964:

1964 (Dems in control)
GOP: July 13th-16th
Dem: August 24th-27th

1968 (Dems in control)
GOP: August 5th-8th
Dem: August 26th-29th

1972 (GOP in control)
Dem: July 11th-14th
GOP: August 20th-23rd

1976 (GOP in control)
Dem: July 12th-15th
GOP: August 16th-19th

1980 (Dems in control)
GOP: July 14th-17th
Dem: August 11th-14th

1984 (GOP in control)
Dem: July 16th-20th
GOP: August 20th-23rd

1988 (GOP in control)
Dem: July 18th-21st
GOP: August 15th-18th

1992 (GOP in control)
Dem: July 13th-16th
GOP: August 17th-20th

1996 (Dems in control)
GOP: August 12th-15th
Dem: August 26th-29th

2000 (Dems in control)
GOP: July 31st-August 3rd
Dem: August 14th-17th

2004 (GOP in control)
Dem: July 26th-29th
GOP: August 29th-September 2nd

So if the 2008 Democratic National Convention were to be held on the unusual date of August 25th thru 28th, then what about the GOP, the party that is currently in control of the White House. Are they gonna hold theirs after labor day? Isn't that weird? I didn't know that the opposition party could be the last major party to hold their convention.

I could have sworn I posted on this thread, but I don't see my post???

Was it erased?

But why should the dems be at a disadvantage money wise again? Thank God
its that late.
No one has done it after Labor Day...this is perfect for the dems.

Also think NY is best because it is media capital of the world. More publicity, unless they went to New Orleans, that would be symbolic, but LA is going to be hard
for dems to win now that the electorate has changed so drastically.

Just for the record, I said what I said about of course Schumer wanted it in NYC for exactly the reason you stated. I added the Hillary thing as an aside. Schumer wants it in NYC because it's good for NY (and because it's a great city). I only brought up the Hillary factor because she's his partner in the Senate.

They better choose a good state this year because the last two states were already secure... MA and CA.

ReElectAlGore2008 - November 7, 2005 11:17 AM (GMT)
Historically you don't have your convention in a hostile state, but in one where you give the people going a good time, and two, you get the most publicity

You need to have mega hotel rooms and NY California has the advantage that the press outlets already have a base there, instead of moving 1000s and 1000s in
the state

The more pleasurable for the press, the better the write up

and Bill Clinton did well in NY, and lives there, so I would think he will do all he can to get it in NY

Besides, a convention is really no longer that important, except for the hype, because all candidates are chose before anyhow, and all
