GANNETT STATE BUREAU

NEWARK — Despite campaign attacks that charge he's too closely aligned with the president, Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Forrester stood proudly with Bush on Friday — well, with first lady Laura Bush.
The first lady helped state Republicans raise $350,000 at a 250-person event. While the contributions went to the state party and Assembly candidates, Bush's seven and a half minute address focused solely on Forrester, whom she called "a proven leader."
Before the appearance, Forrester held a news conference with representatives of "Women for Forrester" and "Save Douglass College."
He reiterated his support for keeping the Rutgers University college an all-woman institution and pledged he would bring equality for women in elected office and business.
"Until we take affirmative steps to making sure that we have a full participation of women at all levels of government and our economic enterprises, we will not be successful," he said.
