Title: Should the Convention be held in New Orleans?

JamesAquila - September 9, 2005 10:27 PM (GMT)
I know this may be too soon to discuss, but in 2004 the GOP held their convention in NYC to exploit 9/11. So should the Dems to the same in 2008 and hold their convention in New Orleans?

That is an interesting thought.

I think we need though to see how they are coming back...

Are the poor being allowed back in by then? Did the repubs use it to redistrict?

If Al Gore/ Barack Obama are the team, it would send a powerful message

ALGOREismylife - September 9, 2005 11:34 PM (GMT)
Yes, that would be a great idea, if there is still a NEW ORLEANS. I don't look at it like it's exploiting this disaster. I think it would be something that could bring people together.

On the face of it, your idea is a wonderful one. Rubbing the repubs faces in it, so to speak, at the scene of the Bush administration's greatest travesty, can't be beaten.

There is a problem of a suitable location for a convention of that magnitude in New Orleans, though. I can just about guarantee right now that the city of N.O., though they will definitely rebuild the city, will almost certainly demolish the Super Dome AND the Convention Center. There was just too much death and heartache at those locations. Like "Ground Zero" in NYC, they will have to be completely rebuilt or turned into memorials. I don't think this can be done in time for the convention.

I've never been there. Does N'Orlans have any other sites large enough for a convention?

I voted no, but that I thought it should be in the South. I don't think two wrongs make a right. I don't think that just because the Repugs exploited 9/11 by holding the convention in NYC that Dems should do that in '08 in New Orleans. Besides, on a more pragmatic level, I doubt the city will be able to handle all that by then. Not only will it need a convention center, it needs hotels, restaurants, etc., for all the people who come to a political convention. But mostly, I just think it's in poor taste given the tragedy that has occurred there. I wouldn't want to see that exploited by anyone for political gain.

Garden Stater - September 13, 2005 01:22 AM (GMT)
I agree with Earth Mother, as wrong as it was for Bush to hold the Republican Convention in NYC to exploit Sept.11th, it would be just as wrong for us to exploit the tragedy in New Orleans for political gain. Beyond that, I think it would rub the citizens of New Orleans (if they're ever allowed to return) the wrong way. I think they would view it as "first the Republicans ignored us, now the Democrats are using us". Not to mentin the kinds of tie ups such conventins create in their hosting cities.

FellowDemocrat - October 9, 2005 06:01 PM (GMT)
No, then the Republicans would say we did it for political gain... kinda like theirs being in NY.

ReElectAlGore2008 - October 9, 2005 07:15 PM (GMT)
I asked this question a month ago, so its not too soon

Gore/Obama and NO and it would send some message, assuming there is something there to celebrate

Might be something to have it in Texas in your face style

IF the dems win the governor race in Florida, I would as 2nd choice have it
in Florida (which would be great if Gov/Sen Graham is involved in the team, he is still a great choice for veep

My main concern is that the conventions take place within the hurricane season. Also, the GOP could whine about dems exploiting the disaster for political gain.

RVS - October 12, 2005 01:17 AM (GMT)
There definnitely will be a New Orleans. I have been back down there several times since the storm and people have already started rebuilding. Also, I believe that the excitement of such an event would spur all of the wonderful restaraunts and hotels back to their pre-Katrina splendor. More pragmatically, I also believe that the effect on Louisiana may be positive enough to move us back to the blue column.

Nicholus Odem - October 12, 2005 02:45 AM (GMT)
The Democratic convention for '08 should be in San Diego or Seattle.

greyfox - October 12, 2005 02:57 AM (GMT)
The more and more I think about it, I think the convention should be held in Louisiana. Just like how the repugs were in NYC, this would remind America of a national tragedy and we could build off that. We could make it the central issue, how conservatism kills.

Nicholus Odem - October 12, 2005 02:59 AM (GMT)
The Democratic Party must move beyond the crisis of the moment....Be a party for the rest of the 21st Century...The West is the promised land for so many demographic reasons if the right amount of effort and imagination are applied.

I think it sounds opportunistic - and often people who live in the area that conventions take place are upset about the disruption it causes.

What about Nashville? Especially if a guy named Gore were to be the nominee?

But first, we have to do what we can to hopefully make that happen.

Nicholus Odem - October 14, 2005 02:08 AM (GMT)
As an attempt to begin reclaiming southern voters, Nashville could showcase a paradigm shift in thinking for the Dems. As a native, I would be proud. Good suggestion, though I think the West is still the future for demographic and geographic reasons.

greyfox - October 14, 2005 03:59 AM (GMT)
Nashville would be a good idea.
