Title: Senate Dems, the GOP and the Filibuster

Has anyone been following this story? Of Bush's 215 judicial nominees, 205 have been confirmed by the Senate but 10 have not due to a filibuster staged by Senate Dems. These are very extreme conservatives who would not follow the constitution but their own political views. (Of course the hypocritical Republicans fail to mention the 40 judicial nominees by Clinton that they bottled up over the years.)
Bill Frist and the GOP are considering what is called the 'Nuclear Option' and changing the rules on breaking a filibuster.
Tomorrow night a right wing "Christian" group is airing a live TV special accusing the Senate Dems of being against people of faith. Frist is appearing on the special.
This is a major issue that directly effects our democracy, so I find it odd that there has been no discussion of it here or in other Gore forums. Everyone seems more concerned with internet polls that mean nothing and trashing the Clintons.
How many times have people here piled on Dems in Congress for not standing up to Bush and the GOP? Now that they are standing up, why are there no voices of support here?

I've said on these boards that Harry Reid has done an awesome job standing up to the republicans.

Are the republicans wild though? Next thing they're going to end the Supreme Court if they have a disagreement

Trust me I have been following it. Being a Tennessean, I keep up with all of Frist's diry work. As I also said, last Friday when I saw Al, Rodney was talking to Al about Frist and appearing on that Christian Right program to bash Dems, and Gore seemed upset by the whole thing. If I remember right, I think Gore told Rodney that Frist has finally "flipped his rocker".

I hope this backfires and he exposed as the crook and liar he really is.

Frist really has turned out to be a partisan disappointment. He came across at first as the kindly doctor that seemed to be a man of the people but after he became majority leader, he flipped out. Must have drunk the kool-aid.

During the past pres. campaign he actually laughed about stalling a vote so Kerry would not get a chance to vote on it.

I am very scared about the prospect of all strict revisionist judges on the court. They wanna revise our constitution to actually take rights OUT. Well, that is how we shoudl frame the issue of judges. And the GOP better not pass it, or America will become a dictatorship.

I have sent a letter to the editor of the Tennessean imploring them to cover Al's speech tomorrow re: The poison pill of Democracy, Frist's attempt at killing the judicial filibuster, something Frist did not mind using when he was trying to stop Clinton's judicial choices.
I castigated the mainstream media including the Tennessean over ignoring such important issues of the day including Al's previous moveon speeches re: The Iraq War, the environment and our Democracy or just covering the superficial aspects instead of the substance.
I would humbly suggest everyone send a letter to the editor of your paper or news outlet and give them a heads up re: this speech and the importance of the filibuster. They may or may not listen but this is the best thing that I can think of for us to support not only Al but also the Fourth Estate, because today true Journalism is under attack from the powers that be in all sort of manner, from Bush's paid propaganda journalists, to Gannon/Guckert to the comglomeration of Television stations and newspapers in the same city. I also asked them to treat us like adults and quit feeding us all the tabloid pablum.

like freedom of speech, religion, etc.

Those aren't rights I would want taken away but I think our country is too easy on crime.

Funny. I never saw Frist as the kindly doctor. I only saw him as a right-wing extremist. I can only hope that this effort to bring religion into politics will once again backfire like it did with the Terry Schiavo case. I think Americans may finally be waking up to the fact that the religious right is getting out of control. One can only hope . . .

Also, was it Bob Dole who said that the Republicans better think twice about doing away with the filibuster since they won't be in control forever? Wise thinking. If only the rest of them were as wise as Dole.
